Our Q&A with the East London duo

Happy ‘Straya Day from TISFWO!

What’s more important than snags, cricket, beer, pavlova, facepaint or sunshine (of which there is a definite lack of in Sydney) on Australia Day?  The music. If you’re not tuning into the triple Hottest 100 tomorrow, or if you need some tunes to carry you even further into the day/ night, we’ve devised an awesome ’straya day playlist to get  you patriotic about our great Aussie music catalogue. The list includes Silverchair, Ratcat, INXS, Cold Chisel, Icehouse, Men At Work (without saying), Powderfinger, AC/DC and even Craig Machlachlan…. click here or below to play.

Q&A with She Can DJ winner, Minx

Last year, at a spectacular awards night at Sydney’s Ivy nightclub, Sydney-born House DJ Minx (aka Rachel Phillips) was officially crowned the winner of EMI’s inaugural She Can DJ competition.

minxpackshot

So what’s happened since for Minx? The In Sound caught up with her to get the latest:

The In Sound: Congratulations on winning She Can DJ! How has your life changed since you won?
Minx: It’s a lot more hectic! I guess as far as gig schedules, tour schedules, production schedules and obviously having EMI on board now, my whole life has changed, but it’s all for the best, and all for building my brand. It’s really exciting working on original tracks and gigging overseas, and with the CD about to drop and my 3 month tour happening off the back of that, it’s all really exciting!

IS: No rest for the wicked! Can you tell us a bit about the album?
M: It’s a mix compilation CD, so it’s She Can DJ presents Minx. There are 17 tracks on there of songs that I’ve loved over the past year and songs that are coming out at the moment which I’m also loving.

IS: And are there any remixes on there?
M: Well there’s Swedish House Mafia remixed by Tommy Trash and Calvin Harris mixed by Benni Benassi, so they’re all kind of big dance tracks remixed by other people. I’ve also got my first two original tracks on there as well!

IS: Are you playing any festivals?
M: I do festival season every year. So I just did Stereosonic  and played with Avicii during his side show as well.

IS: Where will you be playing for your upcoming tour?
M: It’s both Australia and New Zealand, so the CD is released March 2nd, which means I’ve got two pre-release shows from the 25th February and then I go on my big tour, which is over 20 dates!

IS: Are you heading back to Ibiza this year?
M: Yes! I think that’s on the cards. I think I’m just trying to get my head around what’s happening the next couple of months! (laughs) But the plan is to go back over this year;

IS: So what’s your dream?
M: Well, I have been playing overseas for a few years now, so the main thing is production and that’s what I’ve been doing at the moment. I’ve just finished my first two tracks which will be on this CD and I’m working on my third, which is almost finished. Obviously, with winning She Can DJ, I get to produce an album, so it’s a collaboration basically with hopefully some of my favourite artists from around the world, who are mainly European and UK based, so I’d head over there and get a chance to jump into the studio with some of those guys and learn from them and make some songs together and put it on the album!

IS: And who are your favourite artists?
M: Haha, how long do you have?

IS: Top ten?
M: Well the guys like Swedish House Mafia are a sound that I play and love. If you see me play at festivals and clubs, that’s what I do; I play progressive house, a lot of main room sounds and those kinds of guys do that really well. For example, Dirty South, being someone that I’ve known for many many years, who’s been a great mentor, and someone that I’ve played with many times, his productions are ridiculous, so he’s a big one for me! Local guys Hook and Sling, Tv Rock; those guys are great. But Avicii who was out here recently;  I’m a big fan of his. Eric Prydz is my favourite producer, so if I ever got a chance to go and see him, that would be cool!

IS: Being one of our top female DJs, and obviously after winning a big competition like this, do you think the industry needed a competition like She Can DJ?
M: Nothing like this has been done before, I mean there are lots of DJ competitions around, but nothing with prizes like this one had to offer, or showcasing the talent of female DJs in this country.  I think when you meet people and you tell them what you do as a female DJ, they’ll say “Oh! There’s not really many of you out there are there?” But there was hundreds and hundreds of entries for this competition alone, let alone what it’s going to be like when it goes global. It just makes people realize there is a huge female base within the industry that they don’t know about, so I think that’s the main thing. There was definitely a market for it, and to get us out there and a bit more known, as it’s not just a men’s club!

IS: Yeah, I think I saw in a magazine recently, they ran their top 50 DJs, and there was about two females in there?
M: Yeah, well, In The Mix run a DJ competition every year and I was the only female that got in the 50. That was a public vote; so obviously the public don’t really acknowledge how many female DJs are out there. So I was stoked that I got in there!

IS: That’s crazy!
M: Yeah it will be interesting to see, if this competition runs again, whether there will be a shift at all.

She Can DJ Presents Minx –  a massive 78 minute big-room house music mix compilation featuring  Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, Calvin Harris, deadmau5 and Madeon will be released on March 2nd.

The incredible Emeli Sandé …

It’s only my second day here interning at EMI and already I’ve been given the exciting honour of writing about one of our most incredible new artists, Emeli Sandé. Hailing from Northern Scotland, the 23 year old multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter has already made her mark on the industry and formed a pretty wide fan base. 2011 proved to be a huge year for Sandé, she was snapped up to support Coldplay on their most recent European and UK tour, collaborated with fellow EMI artist Professor Green on UK chart-topping single “Read All About It” and completed her own headlining tour. The year wrapped up with Sande being awarded the pretty prestigious Critics Choice by the Brit Awards (which takes place next month) and with over 100 artists considered, she came out on top and joined other successful Brit pop songstresses who have previously won the top award (including Florence and the Machine and Adele)… perhaps putting my 23 year old self to shame!

2012 is set to be even better. February sees the release of Our Version Of Events, the highly anticipated debut album from the lovely lass; and with her song writing ability, melodic vocals (and awesome hair do!) I’m sure it won’t dissappoint. It will include previous singles; Heaven and Daddy, as well as some new tracks. It is now available to preorder on iTunes.

She recently appeared and performed on the Graham Norton Show. Here is her outstanding performance, which will actually go to air here on Saturday at 8.30pm on Channel 10.

Don’t Think STARRING THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS A Film by Adam Smith

Don’t Think?! It can be hard to not think A LOT when it comes to the upcoming premier of what poses to be one of the best music movies of this generation. This will be no ordinary documentation, guaranteed. Filmed with 20 cameras at a headline show at Japan’s very own Glastonbury – Fujirock Festival – Don’t Think is the first time the full Chemical Brothers’ live experience has ever been captured on film, let alone in this way.

chembrosmovieConcert movie debut = WINNING. Directed by long-term visuals collaborator Adam Smith this full-length feature film places cameras in the centre of the stage as well as at the very heart of the crowd to perfectly capture a fan’s eye view of the heightened emotional reactions of the audience seeing the band at their very best. “I wanted to capture what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd as well as showing and combining the visuals featured in the show with the footage we captured on this one night; to see how the music and visuals emotionally affect and connect with the audience” says Adam Smith.

Don’t Think undergoes a transformation from concert film to fully immersive document of one of the most mind-bendingly psychedelic live shows ever seen. This is every Chem Bros fan’s dream come true!! Now you don’t have to relive the mind-blowing concert experience via visually and aurally dodgy handheld videos uploaded to youtube! Nope, this release marks the first concert film to feature glorious Dolby 7:1, surround sound, mixed for the big screen by the band themselves. Music to our ears!

For a bunch of lucky fans we’re giving away double passes to see the film nationwide upon it’s release on Feb 3rd!! To enter, simply email us at admin@theinsoundfromwayout.com and answer this question: What’s the one word you would use to describe a Chemical Brothers show?” If you haven’t been to a Chemical Brothers show before watch the full trailer here. Wanna secure your tickets? You can also purchase them here or here!

“This film is the closest I will ever get to being at a Chemical Brothers show…  and yeah, it’s a beautiful experience.” -Ed Simons of The Chemical Brothers

Lucky winner documents his trip to see Coldplay

Late last year Channel 9’s TODAY SHOW ran a major COLDPLAY promotion for a winner and friend to see them live in London just before Christmas.

coldplay

Hew Sandison from Canberra was the lucky winner and obviously a massive Coldplay fan as he documented his trip of a lifetime and put it up on youtube. It’s a gorgeous video, that will give you goose bumps around the 2.20 minute mark. It’s so nice when a true fan wins a competition like this.

EMI Art Project: Matthew Gillett

Matthew Gillett has had a cracking couple of years. In 2010 he enjoyed a packed house at his Mart Gallery exhibition ‘Peace Inside Anxiety’, graced the cover of SMH’s Extra Magazine, collaborated on a project with sunglasses brand Carve and next month he heads off to South Africa for the launch of a signature series t-shirt range with Billabong. In between all of this Matt has just returned from a 10-month stint in Indonesia to work on his next project.

Since landing back on Aussie shores in November 2011, Matt has hit the ground running and has been busy collaborating the works he completed during his overseas stint for his upcoming show, ‘MY ART KILLS MONSTERS’. Check out what it’s all about here.

“Matty G” lives life as he paints. At times gritty and haphazard, at times elegant and graceful, Matt will employ his own independently crafted techniques and spontaneous aesthetics to create something unexpected and always engaging. “After only being back 8 weeks it was unreal to get the opportunity to be involved in the EMI Art Project, a great opportunity to get your art out there for people to see. I have chosen two of my works painted over the last 18 months one finished only a few weeks ago! Enjoy!,” Matt says.

The two paintings Matty has chosen for our latest EMI Art Project window install is ‘DISCONCERTING BI-PRODUCT’ , which Matty explains is for all of us to think about how our social interactions impact other people’s lives.

mattgillet1

The other he calls ‘THE WEIGHT OF ACQUAINTANCES’ which explores thoughts of all the people that come in and out of our lives – some for seconds some for days some forever!

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi new animated video

Directed by Chris Milk and Anthony Francisco Schepperd (who also animated it), the video for ‘Two Against One’  feat. Jack White is the latest installment in Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi’s 5 years in the making: Rome project.

danger3

We are LOVING this video! First of all it’s a hand-drawn cell animation… is that talent or what? The edgy black, white and pops of colour clip is fast paced and confronting, allowing the mellow track to flow smoothly through the hectic visual maze. “Rome as a whole is a piece of music with such a specific identity and history that it was crucial for all the accompanying visuals to reflect that,” says Danger Mouse. Think Gorillaz meets Anime action cartoon: this is art at it’s best. The two minute, 22 second clip is not long enough in our opinion! Agree?

Fear not… the music of Rome is now being developed in to a film and this clip acts merely as an early precursor to a new full-length, live action project. “The music video is essentially the fever dream of the antagonist of the story. It’s mostly his backstory, his life before the tale we see in the movie…These pieces are sort of narrative breadcrumbs that lead you to the eventual larger story,” Chris Milk explains. HUZZAH!! Who doesn’t love breadcrumbs?! We can’t wait to devour the full-length feature either, but until then, check out the facebook page and sink your teeth into this delicious hors d’oeuvre! You won’t be disappointed.

Q&A with BIG DEAL

We think BIG DEAL are a pretty big deal. The boy-girl duo, based in East London, have already released a couple of awesome singles  and debut album Lights Out is due for an Oz  release on January 20th. TISFWO caught up with the handsome pair (Alice Costelloe and kc Underwood) to find out more:

big_deal

What are BIG DEAL all about?
We’re pretty straight forward, it’s just us two. We write together and play together and that’s what makes Big Deal.

Where did your name come from?
A shared terrible sense of humour. We thought it was a funny joke when we started….now it doesn’t seem so entertaining.

Tell us about your latest release?
Our album is out in Europe and the US/ Australia in January. It’s made up of 12 songs we wrote during the summer.

What three albums should people listen to before they put on BIG DEAL?
I don’t know, hopefully people are just listening to music anyway so they don’t need to do any specific preparation before they can play our album. When we were writing the album, Arcade Fire’s the suburbs had just come out and we listened to that alot, so maybe that album.

What’s the one thing you need to bring on tour?
The one thing I think is most important to bring is a toothbrush. KC needs to bring his Nintendo DS and his laptop. The last tour we watched a lot of X Files episodes on the laptop in the van.

What is a BIG DEAL live show all about?
It’s all about the drums.

Best live moment so far?
Playing Reading Festival was great, we played in this big circus tent and got to be re-united with bands who’d become our friends in the year like Grouplove. Then we got to watch the Strokes, one of our favourite bands play later that night. It was the perfect day.

If you could request a ridiculous and excessive rider, what would be on it?
Cornetto Enigmas, pizza, burritos, precious stones, holy water, virgin blood…that kind of thing.

Who would you perform with on stage if you could choose a surprise duet?
That’s a tricky question….I think it would be cool to play with Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT, it would be like a duo of duos.

What’s next for BIG DEAL?
We’ll be touring our album in Europe and the US at the beginning of the next year, going out to SXSW in March, and then start trying to write another album!

Big Deal’s debut album Lights Out is out on January 20th.

Happy Birthday Mr Bowie, here’s 65 interesting things about you

anotherbridge

Happy Birthday Mr Bowie – we love you. All the crazy versions of you – from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, the electro metal guy to just the sharply dressed judge of the catwalk contest in Zoolander. The internet is ablaze with tributes to the man – so we tried to do something a little different. Here are 65 interesting facts about David Bowie, compiled by our staff (and their friends).

1) His real name is David Jones. Not only is it a department chain, it’s also the name of one of the Monkees – hence the change

2) He actually released a number of singles under the name Davy Jones that failed to chart, before becoming the Bowie that everyone knows.

3) Bowie comes from Jim Bowie, the man behind the bowie knife.

4) As a child, he got into a fight with a friend that resulted in one of his eyes being permanently damaged. Sometimes it makes it look as if he has different coloured eyes.

5) His poor eye narrowly escaped more injury in 2004 when during his last world tour, some guy threw a lollipop at him and hit him in the eye.

6) Another of his school friends is Peter Frampton (of Frapmton Comes Alive). They went to school and played in bands together in their teens. They worked together again in the 80s.

7) He studied dance and mime under famous performer Lindsay Kemp. Another famous alumni of Kemp’s is Kate Bush.

8 ) Coincidentally, Kemp appeared in the movie Velvet Goldmine, which was a fictionalised story of a character much like Bowie and Ziggy Stardust. Velvet Goldmine itself is the name of a rather obscure Bowie song.

9) Bowie is of course famous for his acting roles in The Labyrinth and Zoolander.

10) But before that, he starred in his own film – The Man Who Fell To Earth, playing an alien.

11) Other memorable roles include playing his friend Andy Warhol in Basquiat and scientist Nikola Tesla in the Prestige

12) He’s also turned down the chance to play a Bond villain, and Captain Hook in the film Hook

13) He has also turned down the Order Of the British Empire AND a knighthood!

14) The UK Sci-Fi series Life On Mars was named after a Bowie song. A follow-up series was named after another Bowie song – Ashes To Ashes

15) The dreadful US version of Life On Mars actually involved a search for life on the planet Mars. It was silly and no wonder it got cancelled.

16) The film clip for Let’s Dance was filmed in Carinda, NSW, in a little pub with the locals.

17) The film clip for China Girl, made around the same time, was mainly filmed in Chinatown in Sydney

18) The building from the cover of Ziggy Stardust has been renovated, but the phone booth from the back cover is still there (it’s Heddon St, an alley way in Soho, London)

19) David Bowie’s son is Duncan Jones, director of the movies Moon and Source Code

20) Duncan’s first name is Zowie. Yes, Zowie Bowie.

21) The song “Kooks” from “Hunky Dory” was written for Duncan/Zowie

22) 1973 album Pin Ups featured all covers – including Friday On My Mind by the Easybeats!

23) The other person on the cover to Pin Ups is the model Twiggy

24) Other songs Bowie has covered include the Rolling Stones Let’s Spend the Night Together and The Velvet Underground’s I’m Waiting For the Man

25) It’s been almost 9 years since his last new album (Reality in 2003) – the longest gap since he started recording.

26) Bowie sent Molly Meldrum a get well message after his accident late last year.

27) In the movie The Life Aquatic, actor Seu Jorge performs a number of Bowie songs in Portuguese (in a bossa nova style). Many of the lyrics were just made up. The versions were popular enough to warrant their own soundtrack album.

28) Bowie is also a producer, and produced Lust For Life for Iggy Pop and Walk On the Wild Side by Lou Reed, and many others

29) In fact, Bowie loved Iggy. He cites him as an inspiration of Ziggy Stardust, and was responsible for getting his career back on track after the Stooges broke up.

30) Toni Basil – the woman behind the 80s one hit wonder Mickey – was once Bowie’s choreographer.

31) He shares a birthday with Elvis Presley

32) David Bowie actually had his own ISP for a while, and you could register a @davidbowie.com address when you signed up

33) Teen heart throb and quantum physicist Brian Cox said on the BBC in 2011 that “Queen Bitch” (from Hunky Dory) is his favourite song.

34) There is such a thing as Bowie Bonds. You can buy Bonds that are backed by the revenue of David Bowie’s first 25 albums.

35) Wrote Mott the Hoople’s biggest hit – All the Young Dudes.

36) His estimated worth is $215 million. No wonder it’s been a while between tours.

37) When he released the album Low, singer Nick Lowe released an EP called “Bowi” in response

38) Famous collaborators? Plenty. Everyone knows Queen and Jagger – but how about John Lennon on Fame (1975) or Rick Wakeman on Space Oddity

39) It is often assumed Angie by the Rolling Stones was about Angie Bowe, Bowie’s wife in the 70s.

40) The character of Major Tom appears in Space Oddity (1969) and then Ashes To Ashes (1980). But Tom made one further appearance, on Hallo Spaceboy in 1995. He’s due for a fourth appearance then.

41) All up, he’s sold 140 million albums

42) The character of Ziggy Stardust was inspired by many, and one of the main ones was 50s rock ‘n’ roller Vince Taylor. Bowie met Taylor in Taylor’s drugs years, when he believed himself to be an alien.

43) According to his Last.fm stats – Hunky Dory is his most popular album, but Ziggy Stardust is his most popular track.

44) Bowie was always ahead of the game, and was one of the first artists to sign to Rykodisc in the 80s, then innovative for being a CD only label.

45) Bowie contributed backing vocals to Scarlett Johanssen’s debut album – which was all Tom Waits covers.

46) The Ziggy Stardust concert film was the last ever Ziggy gig, and he announced it onstage without telling his band beforehand! The gig ended, appropriately, with Rock ‘n’ Roll suicide.

47) Iman and Bowie have been together now for 20 years this year. Lucky man.

48) His first ever Australian concert was in Adelaide in 1978. He opened with Warszawa, and ended with Rebel Rebel

49) His last ever Australian concert (to date) was in Perth in 2004, where he opened with Rebel Rebel, and ended with Ziggy Stardust.

50) In 1974, the Lewiston Journal voted Bowie the Worst Dressed Woman

51) The Man Who Sold The World has been covered by diverse artists such as Nirvana and Lulu

52) He recorded the Tin Machine album  at 301 Studio’s in Sydney

53) Bowie actually spent 1 year in Sydney in the late 80’s living in Bayswater. Rumor has it he actually rented a Winebago and toured around Australia for a period.

54) Iggy Pop recorded China Girl before David Bowie

55) David Bowie once dated Gun’s N Roses guitarist Slash’s Mom!

56) David Bowie saw Elvis perform in 1973 on his first trip to NYC. He turned up at the show in full ‘Ziggy kit’.

57) David Bowie appeared in the Ricky Gervais comedy Extras and composed a song about Ricky’s character.

58) Bowie hand picked the Angels to support him on his first Australian tour.

59) Sydney band Soap Star Joe paid homage to Bowie and South Sydney Rabbitohs in their single Ziggy Niszczot Never Played Guitar (Niszczot being one of the Rabbitoh’s greats)

60) Bowie sand Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby on Crosby’s show. It ended up being the final released recording in Bing’s lifetime.

61) Steve Marriot wanted to form a band with the pre-fame Bowie and call it ‘David & Goliath’.

62) Bowie paid the late Marc Bolan (of T. Rex)’s sons school fees. Bolan and Bowie were of the same world, and shared producers and backing musicians in the glam days.

63) John Lennon played guitar on Bowie’s cover of Across The Universe.

64) Bowie lives across the street from Moby.

65) Bowie’s first instrument was the sax. His tutor was the bloke that played the solo on Lou Reed’s Walk On The Wild Side – which Bowie produced.

(Thanks to everyone who helped us get to 65, especially Paul Andrews, Ross Clelland and Sean Sennett)
