Norah Jones: Chasing Pirates with the experts

And so we bring you Norah Jones’ video for Chasing Pirates… Not only does it feature pirates (or a very attractive Norah-esque one), the clip was directed by the visual effects master behind all three Pirates of the Caribbean  films, Rich Lee. Hence Norah’s very appropriate “Johnny Forever” tatt:

Here are some more peeks from the filming: Norah Jones Behind The Scenes

Curious what replaced the green screen? Watch the vid in full below… (excuse the pre-roll advert)

Lily Allen and Duran Duran: TckTckTck! The time has come!

How cool is this – Lily Allen and Duran Duran are taking part in Kofi Annan’s innovative digital music petition taking form as the ‘Time for Climate Justice’ campaign! This campaign is to ‘demand climate justice’ at the Copenhagen Summit happening on 7th December 2009 bidding for a binding global climate change agreement to be signed by EVERY Country leader.

Join the fight

60 odd artists in total (including Lily and Duran Duran) have pledged their support for the Time For Justice campaign by participating in a cover of the Midnight Oil song Beds Are Burning which has been rewritten for this cause (props to Peter Garratt for this one!).

In support of this we are holding a rather fun event at EMI HQ but more on that later…

A very Domino Halloween with Wild Beasts

This is such a cute idea!!!

To celebrate Halloween, Domino artists are putting up spooky feature fiction tales they’ve written every day on The Quietus, you can keep an eye out for them here: http://thequietus.com/features

Wild Beasts cottage

First cab off the rank is Tom Flemming from our forthcoming visitors with exquisite lungs and hooks, Wild Beasts! Note the atmospheric spooky cottage.

Kraftwerk Remeistered

Somewhere in my CD collection there’s an old copy of Kraftwerk’s Computer World. Blame it on my childhood in Germany or my early teens listening to Depeche Mode and Gary Numan. Whatever… secretly I always wished Herr Hutter & Co would remaster their old albums. That day finally dawned on Oktober 12 when Kraftwerk unveiled 8 albums with glorious teutonic remastering. Gott im Himmel!

Kraftwerk Albums

If you’ve been hiding in a jazz-tinged elevator, you’ll be thinking “Kraftwerk… who they?”. True, they were never cool in my neighbourhood and I kept quiet about my attempts to dance like a robot to The Model. Little did I know the impact they were having stateside. Turns out Trans-Europe Express was a huge hit with Bronx b-boy crews during the late 70’s. One day Afrika Bambaataa sampled the melody and added a pinch from Numbers to cook up Planet Rock. The rest is hip-hop history. Looking back now, everyone from Grandmaster Flash to Jay-Z and Daft Punk has fessed up to worshipping Kraftwerk.

Just to prove the point, check out Drowned In Sound’s playlist of artists who owe a massive debt to Kraftwerk here and listen out for the Kraftwerk samples in Planet Rock.

So what do the remasters sound like? In a word, stunning. A few critics claim there’s a loss of “spaciousness”, but I suspect they miss the cold tinny sound of the early CDs. Do yourself a favour and crank it up. My personal faves are The Man-Machine (1978) and Computer World (1981). If you’re hiding an old copy, now’s the time to replace it. Or if you ever wondered what electronic music sounded like before MIDI or Auto-Tune, here’s the best place to start. All 8 albums come in slipcases and the artwork has been tarted up. Vorsprung never sounded so inviting.

Coldplay – May the well never run dry

It sounds like Chris Martin was serious when he said, “I don’t believe in time off.”

According to one the all-knowing Sun, Coldplay are back in the studio during their breather between finishing the Northern hemisphere tour and commencing a South American leg. They’ve upgraded from their rather pedestrian studio The Bakery for something more swish up the road. And they appear to be recording an album.

And we’re all for that especially if it means no multi-year ingestion period for the band post-Viva. Chris Martin has said he’s afraid the creative well will run dry as he advances into his 30s “I’m 31 now and I don’t think that bands should keep going past 33.” That was in 2008, so hurry Chris before 33 is staring you down!

In the meantime, watch the above clip to relive one of the most magnificent live moments of the past year when Chris decided to sprint through the Sydney Cricket Ground mid- ‘Fix You’ during the Sound Relief concert. The Sound Relief DVD is out now and includes that magically chaotic performance.

Where Music Meets Art: Images from the designers behind Empire of the Sun & Paul Dempsey

Ahhhh, album artwork… a special kind of magic happens when an inspired graphic designer or photographer meets an incredible musician.

There were no surprises when Empire of the Sun was nominated for a Best Album Artwork ARIA this year – & we bet ya they’ll be taking home all the pointy silver awards this year! The man behind the artwork is Dave Homer of Debaser, and from Nov 6 the brand new Mart Gallery in Surry Hills will be exhibiting a collection of works interpreting some of his favourite album covers of all time.

In fact, Mart Gallery will be a pretty good place to find where music meets art over the upcoming months… It was opened specifically to exhibit artists & photographs who specialise in music art.

    Where Music Meets Art

Through December & January Tony Mott & Sophie Howarth will have some of the most iconic photographs from Big Day Out’s gone by. Soon after, our good mate and talented music-photographer Daniel Boud (he took our mug shots on the Contact page), and music design buffs “We Buy Your Kids” who are responsible for Paul Dempsey’s artwork will also feature.

Follow Mart Gallery on Twitter or check out their Tumblr at www.martgallery.tumblr.com.

Brave new Norah Jones takes on pirates

Norah Jones’ new single ‘Chasing Pirates’ offers a tantalising glimpse into her upcoming album ‘The Fall.’  It’s very cool and…well, groovy. I have thought about it and ‘groovy’ is simply most fitting adjective to describe it.

There will be a full video soon, but for now the sneak peek indicates that Norah literally is chasing pirates of the peg-legged, parrot-on-the-shoulder kind.

Head over the Stereogum to listen to the track in full.

The Fall is out Nov 13.
