Our Best of 2009

Kara

tcv Them Crooked Vultures – self titled

Don’t question The Homme. Turn up your stereo, wait for the drums to kick in on Nobody Loves Me And Neither Do I, and engage in some SERIOUS air-drumming.

ttrap Temper Trap

Somehow manages to balance being utterly beautiful & haunting with pop sensibilities.

royksopp Royksopp – Junior

I’m a sucker for a string section. Royksopp Forever is incredible.

valentinos Lost Valentinos – Cities of Gold

Menacing, dark, indie electro pop. My favourite kind.

swellseason The Swell Season – Strict Joy

Smooth and sexy and heartbreaking as hell. When Glen Hansard says “I want to sit you down and talk“, there will not be much talking happening…

mastodon Mastodon – Crack The Skye

Hard work. Very rewarding.

infusion Infusion – All Night Sun

Where did these guys disaapear to for 4 years? The best beats in the country.

tcm The Crystal Method – Divided By Night

One word: intense. The beats on this album practically rip your guts out, they’re so hard and fast. The Method are so great at combining diverse sounds and blending genres to create seriously dark and intensive breakbeats / hiphop / rock / you name it. As usual, it features a legion of guest artists – Peter Hook, Matisyahu, Justin Warfield, Emily Haines, and LMFAO. Love the Matisyahu single Drown in the Now.

decemberists The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love

Decemberists albums take a long time to click, but keep listening and one day you’ll have an expansive romantic epic on your hands. Counting down the 2010 shows.

It will tear you a new one.
boss Bruce Springsteen – Working On A Dream

gaga Lady Gaga – The Fame Monster
The future of pop.

eugene Favourite album: Eugene & The Lizards – Glue (just made it into 2009!)

domino = best label ever and oh Eugene, you turn my best friend and I back into 12yr old girls (except with better taste in music). Amazing amazing lyrics, supersonic harmonies, and this album is a bit grittier than his others. Grogshop & Sus Law kick particular f***ing ass. Amazeeeeeiiiaaainggg!!!

Mos Def – The Ecstatic

The mighty Mos Def is a quality hip hop artist to the umpteenth degree – please don’t throw your gang signs up at me! This hip hop artist is NOT a hip pop artist (i.e. Nelly, 50 cent, Flo Rider etc).

Listen to tracks Revelations followed by Roses feat. Georgia Anne Muldrow – btw, if you’re a fan of Erykah Badu’s ‘New Amerykah’ album then you should mos def (see what I did there?) listen to Georgia Anne Muldrow’s album Umsindo amazing…. but it’s all about Mos Def this year for me (hello, grammy nominated album!)

For those that can spare an hour, check Mos Def in action on his Japan tour.

OR catering to those who only have 2 mins & 16 secs of free time in their day then check out the video for Supermagic. Note: there are no naked women, pimped out cars or bling in this video.

Tara

As I am very fortunate in this job to have earlybird access to music, I’d like to put on this list the new Laura Marling album for 2010… but I shall wait til next year’s list proper!

dempsey2 Fave blog post: Billie Jean + Paul Dempsey = SplendidI love it when we can stream music first on the InSound and word spreads across the interwebs – Jonsi & Alex, Lily Allen remixes, Massive Attack, Pet Shop Boys… but I think my fave is the video of Paul Dempsey covering Billie Jean at Splendour. Karen took the video at the show and had to give the security guys a bit of Triple A ‘tude to avoid getting booted from the photographer pit.
grizzly-bear 1. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest
abird 2. Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
neko 3. Neko Case – Middle Cyclone
wilco 4. Wilco – Wilco (The Album)

blasko 9. Sarah Blasko – As Day Follows Night
africa 10. The Very Best – Warm Heart of Africa

Justin

steel 1. Steel Panther – Feel The Steel
For all the wrong, but right reasons. Rude, fun and sounds like 1989, not 2009.
dempsey 2. Paul Dempsey – Everything Is True
alice 3. Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way To Blue
florence 4. Florence & The Machine – Lungs
phoenix 5. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
doves 6. Doves – Kingdom Of Rust
wagons 7. Wagons – The Rise And Fall Of Goodtown
kasabian 8. Kasabian – West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum
leader-cheetah 9. Leader Cheetah – The Sunspot Letters
biffy 10. Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions

Just missing out ROOT ! – Surface Paradise

phoenix Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
According to Wikipedia Phoenix used Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies to help them in the creative process for this album, and I think it paid off. As well as being the best live show I’ve seen this year (which included being right opposite Thomas Mars as he jumped into the crowd during 1901) Phoenix’ fourth studio album is truly magical from start to finish that satisfied this true fan and would be a perfect introduction to this french fab four for those who haven’t experienced the love. Highly recommend United, Alphabetical It’s Never Been Like That and the Kitsune Tabloid compiled and mixed by Phoenix if you need something to tie you over till they release their next opus.
