This short film directed by Toby Dye is soundtracked by Massive Attack’s brand new track Paradise Circus, featuring Hope Sandival of Mazzy Star. You can view the film in full tomorrow at massiveattack.com, but why bother when it’s ready for you right here today!?
Don’t be fooled by the sweet little nanna however – these clips are not for the faint of heart or the workplace (unless you work in the adult industry)… Here’s what you’re in for:
In unblinking close-up a frail little old lady looks straight down the lens of the camera as she describes the fuck of her life from nearly forty years ago. Inter-cut with her frank confession is actual footage of the intimate moments she describes; for this senior citizen is none other than the star of one of the most infamous pornographic films ever made, 1973’s The Devil In Miss Jones.
Paradise Circus is the lead track from the Massively (hardi-har) anticipated new Massive Attack album Heliogoland, out on Feb 5, 2010. It’s been a long wait, but by the sounds of this ethereal minimalist track – it’ll have been worth it!
There have been many great basketball teams over the years. Magic Johnson and the LA Lakers; Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics; Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and now… Team InSound? That’s right folks…. EMI have started a local basketball team composed of EMI staff and friends.
The line up:
David Fesdekjian: Point Guard
Dan Baker: Shooting Guard
Brett Morgan: Small Forward
Glen Dickie: Point Guard
Wesley von Grabill: Centre
Tom Inglis: Centre
Chris May: Power Forward
Jordan Deck: Power Forward
This team may not be the most physically fit, most talented, strongest, best shooters or even the fastest team in the league but what we lack in overall basketball ability and skill we make up in heart, whitty remarks to the refs and with a doubt the best Pre-match pump-up music this side of the Harbour Bridge… From Queen’s We Will Rock You straight off their new Greatest Hits CD, to David Guetta’s Sexy Bitch which always goes down a treat, we’ve got a soundtrack that gets everyone’s attention. Mostly because your not supposed to play music in local basketball stadium. But that doesn’t stop team Insound…. And if that’s not enough… check out these uniforms!
Basketball is a great team sport, great cardiovascular exercise! And to add to that, a great stress release, especially after a long day in the office. And lets face it, there not many things in life as gratifying as yelling at the top of your lungs to your boss “GET BACK ON DEFENCE, I DON’T CARE HOW TIRED YOU ARE!!!”. Never fear, everyone get a chance for a good yell or a scream of excitement. We win together and we lose together…. but winning just so much more fun!

December 11 see’s the release of a brand new Pet Shop Boys EP titled Christmas. It’s a five track digital EP featuring:
1. It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas (new version) – originally an exclusive Christmas single issued to members of the Pet Shop Boys fan club in 1997. Produced by Marius de Vries and Pet Shop Boys, this version is based on the original version and has orchestral and choir arrangements by Matt Robertson and Marius de Vries. 2. My Girl – Pet Shop Boys’ arrangement of the Madness classic, My Girl, was originally performed with Suggs and Carl of Madness at last year’s charity benefit, Can You Bear It?, for the family of Chris and Neil’s former assistant and close friend, Dainton Connell, who was tragically killed in a car accident.
3. All Over The World (new version) – A new version of the track which appears on Pet Shop Boys’ latest album, Yes. 4. Viva La Vida/Domino Dancing – A medley of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida and Pet Shop Boys classic Domino Dancing which the duo has been performing on their current world tour. This studio version is produced by Stuart Price. Check out the official Coldplay website where they’ve posted a live PSB clip. 5. My Girl (our house mix)
We have received word and sight of a new project from Jón Þór Birgisson, but the mystery is yet to unravel…
Head over to jonsi.com to preview 5 snippets from tracks (in English no less!) from the upcoming solo release. And if that doesn’t sate your appetite, sign up to his mailing list to receive a free mp3 of Boy Lilikoi.
For those of you unacquainted with the ethereal mews of Jónsi, he is the voice behind Icelandic heart-melters, Sigur Ros and recent side project Jonsi and Alex.
Riding off the back of the biggest ARIA Awards since Ben Hur (please don’t mention that ARIAs didn’t necessarily operate during the time of Christ), it’s difficult to let the party die down. After all, it’s only 3 weeks til Christmas!
So indeed the good times continue with the news that we (that’s EMI worldwide, not my band) have FIFTY SIX Grammy Award nominations in the whopping one hundred and nine categories – far too many to list, but here are our EMI highlights!
Multiple nominees include our favourite shaggy-haired, bikini-babe-surrounded Frenchman David Guetta (who also produced The Black Eyed Peas’ Grammy nominated album and record of the year), Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Keith Urban and American Classic legend Willie Nelson.
Katy Perry announced the Best Rock Album nominees and discussed the Black Eyed Peas nominations – watch the videos.
And yes, the reason why the Grammy artwork is so cool this year is no other than Shepard Fairey – the man behind THAT Obama / Hope and Obey / Giant artwork – is responsible. OBEY (great music)
OK Lightspeed fanclub (YES YOU), something to make your Friday freaking awesome because WE ALL LOVE US SOME OF THIS WUNDERKID!
Presenting the sensational video for Lightspeed Champion AKA Dev Hynes’s killer new single Marlene… It’s the first track from his wonderful new album, Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You out on January 29, 2010. The clip is cute and odd… what else can you say but back to the future psychedelic sci-fi spaghetti western!!
This is what Dev had to say about it: “Marlene” a compass amidst a “Chancellors Nightmare”, foretold through the soap of modern ages.
And calling all film buffs – someone please tell me the name of the bad dude in the pic with the long hair?
He’s been in Adam Sandler, Chris Kattan, Rob Schneider type flicks right?

Here at EMI A&R, we spend lots of time answering questions of independent artists whether we’re out and about, at a conference or on email. We thought it would be good to share those answers more broadly and make them public so everyone can benefit from them.
Every month, we’re going to be answering your questions in blog posts or direct to camera about life at a major label and Australian music in general.
You can see the first installment here with EMI’s A&R scout Mark Holland discussing a day in the life of an A&R scout, the role of MySpace and his favourite Australian producers.

2009 was an amazing year seeing the reformation of Blur, and now they are celebrating a cinema release early in 2010 titled No Distance Left To Run. Global cinema release dates are on their way…
Filmed throughout the band’s 2009 rehearsals and acclaimed summer tour, No Distance Left To Run finds all 4 members of blur together for the first time in 9 years. It was directed by by 32 (Dylan Southern & Will Lovelace, who also directed Franz Ferdinand’s clip for Ulysses).
With previously unseen archive material alongside new interviews and reportage, the film recounts the highs and lows of THE essential Britpop band from the late 80’s to their headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park this year. The result is a musing on Englishness and identity, a portrait of friendship and resolution, and a whole lot of crowdsurfing.
Here’s the trailer which reminds me how much I loved them:
