The warbly wonders of the UK, Wild Beasts are arriving in Sydney momentarily for the Laneway Festival – but not before announcing a super-exciting all-ages and free acoustic show show at Red Eye Records. Question is, will your boss let you off early from work to go see them? Fingers crossed…
The show will take place this Wednesday Feb 3 at 4pm at Red Eye Records, 66 King Street (between George and York Sts). Who’s up for loitering in the store afterwards flicking through countless 12-inches? God bless Red Eye…
Touring in the wake of everyone’s-favourite-indie-album-of-2009 Two Dancers, Wild Beasts are also appearing at Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory and the East Brunswick Club in Melbourne. Tour dates here.
Promised we’d be back with Big Day Out reports didn’t we?
Those dedicated festival-goers who were primed and ready in the beating midday sun were treated to something very special… Miami Horror’s summer anthem Sometimes gathered up the early crowds.
Amazing to see Ben’s tightly coiled curls didn’t frizz up in the heat and Josh’s feathered shoulders wafting some cool air onto the crowd below – but really it was all about those Miami dirty synth arpeggios. Get into it!
When the Miami Horror chaps finish up the Big Day Out and Lily Allen tour you can catch them at MSFEST Launceston, St Kilda Festival at ESPY and with Phoenix in March. Full tour dates here.
Confession. I share my birthday with Laura Marling (b. Feb 1, 1990). But I was born in a decade that was neither the 1990s nor the 80s. This makes me feel a bit unaccomplished compared to my fellow February first-er.
Especially upon the news that Miss Marling is not releasing one album this year but TWO!
I Speak Because I Can will be released March 19th, it features the beautiful, wistful Goodbye England (Covered in Snow) and the ferocious folk number Devil’s Spoke. But it seems there are more songs to come, so following Laura’s sold out tour of Australia, she’s going back to the studio with Ethan Johns to record the companion to Speak. We shall receive that later in the year.
Brand new video for Devil’s Spoke, filmed in India.
Robbie Williams performed Morning Sun, one of my faves off the new album Reality Killed The Video Star, at the NRJ Awards in France
…where he also took home the award for “Best International Male” presented by Jean Paul Gautier and the stunning Dita Von Teese… those French know how to do it don’t they!?
Keep an eye out for Rob at this years Brit Awards on Feb 16 where he will be awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Channel [V] are airing it in Australia on Feb 22.
Well it was bloody hot at this years Big Day Out Sydney but there was heaps to see and do to stop you thinking about the weather
Highlights for me were definately Peaches, Dizzy and Jet but it was all really topped off by Muse…AMAZING, especially their encore performance of ACDC’s ‘Back In Black’ with Nic Cester from Jet. Check it out here:
Lots more reports from the Big Days Out coming right up – it’s not finished the national tour yet!
If you’ve been watching SBS of late you would have heard a familiar voice in the Big Love promo running at the moment, yes that’s our very own Julia Stone singing For You from Angus & Julia Stone’s new album Down The Way due out March.
The guys will also kick off a national tour in March which is near sold out – log onto angusandjuliastone.com.au for all the deets.
After a night of seeing Miami Horror, Lily Allen and then Karaoke with The Midnight Juggernauts and some beers for good measure I’m a little weary while writing this post. Add to that the fact I should have posted this last week and it brings on feelings of inadequacy that I usually only feel in the bedroom.
But anyway I thought that it was worth posting some footage of Miami Horror and Neon Indian performing Make You Mine at the inaugural Sandcastles Festival in Melbourne.
Alan / Vega / Neon Indian features heavily on the new Miami Horror record that’s due later this year. We had a listen to some of the tracks yesterday and it’s sounding super cool. Think Manfred Mann meets Daft Punk meets AIR meets Animal Collective. Along with Neon Indian there’s also tracks that feature Josh from the band, Penelope from Golden Filter, Mai and Sam Lawrence (who sang with the band at Falls Festival and if you have footage of that post it!!!)
In true journalistic fashion I recently caught up with Hugh Waters the promoter of Sandcastles festival and asked him some amazingly in-depth questions.
Hi Hugh?
Hi.
Hugh, how was it putting on your first festival?
Interesting learning experience. It wasn’t full scale and we were working with people who already put on large outdoor events. It was pretty much just booking and promotion for us but definitely a fair bit different to clubs.
Hugh, as someone who gave Miami Horror some of his first DJ gigs do you feel happy to see where they are now? What do you think the album will be like?
Yeah its great to see Miami go from just an idea to the top of his game. I think it’s good they haven’t rushed anything and I think this will mean the album is good quality as well.
Hugh, what were some of your highlights from the day?
Seeing some of the smaller bands from Melbourne really pull good crowds and put on amazing shows. Madonna, Will Wagner , The Kickabouts, got the vibe going early.
Hugh, will Sandcastles be back in 2011?
Not sure depends on the councils feedback but i think everything went smoothly for them
Murdoc of new-tweet-dom fame (@MurdocGorillaz) is now broadcasting a Pirate Radio show from the lost Plastic Beach island currently inhabited by the Gorillaz crew floating out on the high seas. Tune in for Murdoc’s personal selection of pirate sea shanties and modern island-themed tunes, commentary on what he spent his Demon Days $$$ on, complaints about the island weather, witty ditties about his record collection, crude jokes, on-air drunkenness, and most importantly… NEW GORILLAZ TUNES!
He’s not actually sure whether anyone out there on the high seas can really hear him, so tune in and drop him a line at www.gorillaz.com
Also keep an eye on the map at Gorillaz.com which seems to be updating daily – perhaps showing the location of the band’s plastic island? It’s a mystery!
Welcome to The Land Down Wonder… a parallel universe full of chooooons! Stop short of the Land Down Under, press play, and jump down the rabbit hole – and you’ll find yourself in a world of indescribable emotions brought on by lovely phonics and super sonics. Yes, the passage to this place is triggered by glorious sounds and pure euphonious beauty – i.e. by listening to sweet, sweet tunes!
Oddities can come from space, a la Bowie. And they can come from parallel universes, a la Dr Who, Red Dwarf, etc (also from our everyday universe, a la suburban shopping malls and Donatella Versace’s skin tone). Owen Pallett’s music comes from another place altogether, one that is so brilliant it’s hard to comprehend, but…! Who cares – where it takes us is all that matters, right?! And that is somewhere beyond wonderful. Head to his myspace page, where his whole album is up for you to enjoy.
Press play and you’ll be flying with me, wonderlings…
