Film review: ‘Don’t Think’

The Chemical Brothers movie

Did someone say Chemical Brothers?

So… erm… just quietly…… THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS ARE WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Chemical Brothers have been an absolute personal favourite since the early 90s when they named themselves the (UK) Dust Brothers, remixing for Leftfield / Orbital / Underworld – and two young hoodlums with a Porsche decided to flip the bird to a speed camera the finger during Block Rockin’ Beats in ‘97. Since then, Ed and Tom have created some of the most addictive big beats and (between collaborating with the likes of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and Dom & Nic for their videos, and Tappin Gofton and Kate Gibb on album artwork) some of the most innovative visuals in music history – resulting in five UK #1 albums in a row! Ahhh, they’re heaven!!

The Chemical Brothers!

Enough about the past however… we have new tunes! The new Chems album Further arrives in Australia on June 4 and the lead track Escape Velocity is already streaming online. It’s not what I’d call easy listening: the 12 minute psychedelic epic sets your head spinning awash in a sea of spacey beeps and echoes: half Private Psychedelic Reel Part 2, half Burst Generator, all 4-am-dance-floor.

Much like Massive Attack’s Heliogoland, The Chemical Brothers’ Further will include visuals and 8 short films specifically matching each album track. The visuals will be provided by long-time collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall, who’ve created backdrops for every Chems gig since their live debut in 1994 (which from personal experience, are utterly spectacular – please head back to Oz boys!)

So far we’ve only wrapped our ears around this one track but we’re counting down the days til…

  • Snow
  • Ecape Velocity
  • Another World
  • Dissolve
  • Horse Power
  • Swoon
  • H+D+B
  • Wonders Of The Deep
