LCD Soundsystem’s “Drunk Girls” – the Spike Jonze video!

James Murphy + Spike Jonze. It was an inevitable and long overdue combination of musical + directorial talent.

What wasn’t inevitable however, was a cohort of Evil (and possibly drunk) Panduhs crash-tackling Murphy, pimping him up in a mini-dress and makeup, and binding him to his compatriots with duct tape.

One thing is official… if I wasn’t scared of pandas beforehand, I am now.

Evil Panduhs

Once you’ve had the wits scared out of you by the inner workings of Jonze’s mind, head on over to lcdsoundsystem.com/thisishappening to listen to LCD Soundsystem’s new album This Is Happening in full!

If you really really like it (we do), then you can pre-order the album from JB Hi-Fi and receive free a LCD Soundsystem tote bag + a download of LCD’s Bye Bye Bayou:

Aussie Artists come out for International Record Store Day

Ahhh, International Record Store Day… this time last year I was hunching over the racks in Reckless Records in Chicago’s Wicker Park, tirelessly flicking through vinyl searching for My Morning Jacket’s special Record Store Day edition of Celebración De La Ciudad Natal.

Alas, whilst Australia doesn’t have our own Reckless Records or town halls full of vinyl enthusiasts (see below), we are blessed with Red Eye Records, Landspeed, Egg, Fish, and Title. Long may they prosper.

Chicago Record Store Day

We’re also blessed to have incredible Australian artists who give two hoots about the tangible experience of purchasing an album. Here’s what some of our guys had to say:

John Williamson John Williamson

“When I release a CD it’s not just about the music. We spend a lot of time dreaming up a package that will be enjoyed for years to come as an item of history; something to hold and flick through to give the listeners a contact with me and my thoughts. So when I go into a music store I know what has gone into all the CDs on display. You can learn a lot about the artists. So go down to your local store and buy a real one!”

Note – John Williamson will be participating in a Record Store Day signing this Saturday April 17 from 10.30-11.30AM:

JB HI FI TOOWOOMBA
Market Place
255-257 Maragret St

Birds of Tokyo Adam Weston, Birds of Tokyo

“There’s something intriguing and almost romantic about purchasing a brand new CD or record. Whether you’ve been waiting for your favourite band’s release to hit stores or you decided to make a choice out of curiosity, once you unwrap the little audio bundle of joy, a relationship has begun! The majority of artists in one form or another have this in mind and as such go to great artistic lengths to present their work to you in a fashion they ultimately want you to embrace and enjoy. Illegal downloading has robbed us of these pleasures and has pathetically sacrificed the audio quality of great albums past and present. If you care to keep important elements of the recording industry alive then you too will celebrate record store day!”

The Cat Empire Jumps, The Cat Empire

“I have been collecting records since i was 15 and have always loved my local record store. Whether you are into vinyl or cd’s a record store is a place to meet new people, talk about music and exchange opinions about albums and tunes. More importantly it gives you insight and knowledge about new and old releases, to me there is nothing better than finding a new album or song which you have never heard before that just rocks. Support your local record store”.

Keith Urban Keith Urban

“There’s nothing like being physically immersed in and surrounded by so much passionate art. The real beauty of a great record store is being reminded that music isn’t just an acquisition, it’s an experience.”

JET: The busiest men in rock’n'roll this week

JET flew back into Australia this week after a couple of months touring overseas to appear on the first show of Hey Hey It’s Saturday and blew the 1.5 million viewers away with performances of She’s a Genius and Seventeen. Their GOLD album quickly jumped back up the iTunes chart to #11 and they were interviewed by anyone who was anyone in media including (but certainly not limited to) Hamish & Andy, Triple M’s Grill Team, The Today Show, Nova Nights, Angela Bishop, Hot 30 and B105 + heaps of press.

The Grill Team were proud to present them with a GOLD award this morning on air for their album Shaka Rock and single She’s A Genius seen here:

One of my favourite moments from this visit was their cover of INXS’s Never Tear Us Apart at Nova.

JET will be touring with Powderfinger later this year and tickets go on sale at the end of this month… don’t miss it.

Lou Bradley guest post: the making of “Cowboy”

Only in the hills of Mullumbimby could this gig take place! Lou Bradley here… how are all you townies?! Just wanted to tell you about a music video and gig that I had going on over the weekend up here in the Mullumbimby Hills.

The idea was this. We were shooting a clip for my new single Cowboy. Rather than follow the tradition of “hammy crappy country music cowboy clips, where hunky cowboy meets barbie blonde and falls in love approach’, I decided that using dolls would be fun. So we had a “Lou” doll and a hippy style mountain man cowboy doll and ran around the streets of Mullumbimby and up in the rain forest, pretending that they were human. It was way fun!

The end of the clip was suppose to incorporate the dolls getting together at the local country hall and watching a gig (Lou Bradley gig) for a dance (and a pash). So I booked the hall and was going to put on a show for all the colourful locals to attend and have a wing-ding.

But half way through the day of the shoot I found out that the hall was double booked by a 90th birthday party! Bumma! I had advertised through radio and print media and had the local ABC lady texting me saying how excited she was to come to the hall for the gig! I figured it was not really the done thing kicking out the grannys, so… we raced up the valley to the hall and pinned up signs and put up arrows and balloons all the way to my house (which is way up high in the mountains and almost impossible to find). We figured we would put on a house concert in true hippy style… find us if you dare. It was a hoot!

We managed to get around 40 or 50 people and it was such a great show..we ate stew and curry and drank wine and well… you know??? And the best part was, the dollies had a great time dancing and ended up being caught out on the couch!!

Never a straight line for me! Thank God!

International Record Store Day – Support Your Local Indie

A while ago I found myself in Canberra with nothing to do. It’s a common problem in Canberra, but instead of getting drunk I stumbled into a little store called Landspeed Records. Within seconds I was mesmerised by shiny indie-rock gems and rare collectors’ items. I was vaguely aware of the wife prodding my arm while I became misty-eyed and remembered the record stores of my youth.

If you’re thinking “where’s this old codger been hiding?”, let me explain: I’m not talking about your average high street chain. I’m talking about an Aladdin’s cave filled with ultra-rare goodies, staffed by a skeleton crew who would pass up a $50 note for the smell of old vinyl. In short, heaven for pimply students.

Allow me to wax lyrical about the indie stores of my youth. I remember walking around the streets of Brighton (England) when I was barely ten. My Dad’s record collection began and ended with Donovan, so I needed a good education. In those days, indie stores attracted customers who swapped tips about the latest bands. If the owner knew you, he would recommend something or let you listen without obligation. This was the days before the internet and I still reckon there’s no substitute for personal tips. There were over a dozen shops in Brighton, but I only remember names like Fine Records or Sounds Unlimited.

Laura Marling Live on the Wireless Tonight

NME <3 Laura Marling

When English lass Laura Marling came to Australia in January for an all too brief East Coast tour and a bit of sunshine, she introduced audiences to many a new song from I Speak Because I Can. Now that we’ve become all cosy and properly acquainted with the LP, it’s time to revisit the show from The Corner Hotel in Melbourne. Triple J recorded the show and will be playing it tonight on air and online at 8pm. The encore gets played on Sunday at 5pm.

Laura was one of the 10 featured ‘new look’ NME covers last week. She brought her coffee mug and ciggie and James Murphy brought his dog. But Rihanna outdid them both with her bedazzled bird!

I Speak Because I Can is out now. Direct message us on Twitter by 5pm today for a chance to win the stunning sold out CD/DVD Ltd Edition.

Did someone say Chemical Brothers?

So… erm… just quietly…… THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS ARE WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Chemical Brothers have been an absolute personal favourite since the early 90s when they named themselves the (UK) Dust Brothers, remixing for Leftfield / Orbital / Underworld – and two young hoodlums with a Porsche decided to flip the bird to a speed camera the finger during Block Rockin’ Beats in ‘97. Since then, Ed and Tom have created some of the most addictive big beats and (between collaborating with the likes of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and Dom & Nic for their videos, and Tappin Gofton and Kate Gibb on album artwork) some of the most innovative visuals in music history – resulting in five UK #1 albums in a row! Ahhh, they’re heaven!!

The Chemical Brothers!

Enough about the past however… we have new tunes! The new Chems album Further arrives in Australia on June 4 and the lead track Escape Velocity is already streaming online. It’s not what I’d call easy listening: the 12 minute psychedelic epic sets your head spinning awash in a sea of spacey beeps and echoes: half Private Psychedelic Reel Part 2, half Burst Generator, all 4-am-dance-floor.

Much like Massive Attack’s Heliogoland, The Chemical Brothers’ Further will include visuals and 8 short films specifically matching each album track. The visuals will be provided by long-time collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall, who’ve created backdrops for every Chems gig since their live debut in 1994 (which from personal experience, are utterly spectacular – please head back to Oz boys!)

So far we’ve only wrapped our ears around this one track but we’re counting down the days til…

  • Snow
  • Ecape Velocity
  • Another World
  • Dissolve
  • Horse Power
  • Swoon
  • H+D+B
  • Wonders Of The Deep

Weekend Chuckle – Old Spice: The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

Alright, we acknowledge this has SFA to do with music or The In Sound… However the ladies in the office (& one lad from our sales team) have just rediscovered Old Spice.

(It’s 7.2 million views old but we’re music geeks who spend our days on YouTube Music rather than noticing Superbowl commercials)

As a tenouous link… maybe “the tickets to the thing you love” are for the Australian 30 Seconds To Mars tour???
