So what happened to the couple at the end of the Miami Horror Sometimesclip? Did they live happily ever after in the dome thing? Did some kind of prehistoric flying creature come down and steel them for baby flying creature food or did they just continue to stare into the distance for a bit, then head back to the beach, get back into their boat and head back to where ever it was they came…
Well the answers to this and many more questions may or may not be answered in the Moon Theory video but it’s definitely going to be amazing.
Check out the preview for Miami Horror’s new video for Moon Theory.
Music and Sport share a lot of similar attributes – They bring out insane levels of passion, fanaticism and much enjoyment to people. They make people’s lives better. Much of our staff actually ‘live and breathe’ music – just like people live for their favourite football team. Both music and sport can also create a lot of controversy and publicity.
Without diversity life would pretty boring. Some people love sports with balls and some with bats… just as some people like metal and some people like pop music. Some people even like all of these.Yesterday most of the company watched John Lennon’s The U.S. vs John Lennon while they ate their lunch.
I’m leading everyone on a bit of a John Lennon re-education journey. Here was a guy who was not only one of the most talented musicians around… but he had opinions and he challenged the norm. He was fighting for a world where “love and peace and tolerance” could co-exist. The footage of him and Yoko using art and music in a really clever way to subvert the mainstream is something I really wish we’d see more of. You certainly feel his influence still.
This morning 2 mysterious pink packages arrived in our reception… Further investigation revealed they were a special delivery from the one & only Keith Urban as a thanks for helping make his latest album Defying Gravity go platinum!
And what brings a music family together more than large quantities of CUPCAKES!?
Fortunately EMI’s COO David Kassler is in Sydney this week from London, just to ensure our afternoon post-sugar-crash doesn’t affect productivity… (PS, yep this is just another day in the Sydney HQ: sunny weather, lunchtime screenings of The U.S. vs John Lennon, and sweet treats from the Urbanator).
A grand song the likes of The Saddest Thing I Know deserves a grand video… and so Birds of Tokyo pulled this epic number out of their collective hat. Personally it has a bit of a Bladerunner feel to it… neon lights, dark smoky rooms, and a wee bit of voyeurism in the mix.
Filmed at the massive Laurel Cayon stages in San Fernando Valley California, before the band headed over to the UK, we all agreed you should see it asap!
As aforementioned, the BoT boys are currently in the UK after playing sold out shows in London and the Great Escape Fest in Brighton. Evidence of them being spotted in London is below – red phone boxes, scarf-worthy weather, etc…
Last week we were ridiculously lucky to be treated with a performance from the truly heartwarming, genuine, and fuzzy-haired Old Man River AKA Ohad Rein… in a roller-door garage in Tempe (don’t ask).
The tune is the ridiculously catchy You’re On My Mind from his forthcoming album Trust, which was written and recorded in Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Mumbai. There’s a super cute video coming soon, but for the moment you’ll have to stream it on his myspace. And trust me, even if you’re not familiar with his name, you already know Old Man River from the gorgeous and omnipresent tracks Sunshine and La.
There’s a question I’m asked about working in A&R time and time again: How do you hear about new acts to sign to the label?
A majority of the time it’s actually from recommendations from our gig-loving staff that are actively out and about on the scene as much as us! It’s great to have a bunch of musical people linking us to new artists / bands they’ve discovered or giving feedback on tunes we’re liking at the moment too.
We wanted to show the staff what actually happens beyond their recommendations – and what better place to do it than in the studio.
The ever-so-lovely people at Studios 301 Sydney (which was formerly owned by EMI Australia!) let us take over their rooms and teach all involved in the process of recording. It was a great vibe for the company being in the same rooms as where Silverchair, You Am I, Snoop Dogg, INXS, The Vines, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, End Of Fashion and many many more have recorded.
Getting the Low Down in Mixing with Anthony Garvin – Studio Manager
Mastering engineer Oscar Gaona gave us a great tutorial in what Mastering actually does to a recording.
And what better way to wrap up the whole experience with a happy snap of the whole company.
We’re all really appreciative of Studios 301 for giving us a real experience within their walls and teaching us a thing or twenty on how the studio operates. I’m pretty sure the company were happy that we got them out of the office for an afternoon too!
Stroll down Oxford St in London this month and you’ll be bombarded with an array of brilliant dioramas in honour of the British music festival season… The windows of the iconic Selfridges dept store are displaying a series of ten song-title inspired dioramas called “Sounds of the Mind” – and Empire of the Sun’sWalking On A Dream is one of them!
The window exhibition is showing now and will be up for 6 weeks with 125,000 people walking past them each day. Check out the pics below – the two lions kinda remind me of the terrifying Sphinx Gate in The Neverending Story!
If you guess the song titles of all the window displays, you can win £500 to spend at selfridges.com, but we can give you a headstart by telling you that other artist involved are Hot Chip, Florence and the Machine, Dizzee Rascal, The XX, Marina and the Diamonds, The Drums, The Big Pink, Paloma Faith and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Well, the video for Swoon is a far cry from traditional cinematic Chemical Brothers short films like The Test, Out of Control, and Elektrobank – but it sure as hell doesn’t disappoint!
The big difference is that Swoon was directed by Marcus Lyall and Adam Smith, who have been responsible for creating the visual backdrop for every Chems’ gig since their live debut in 1994. If you’ve ever seen Ed and Tom live, you’ll recognise these incredible animations as a vital element of the live experience…
We know this is just the beginning of the audiovisual intergalactic journey that is Further… Each album track will have a corresponding Lyall & Smith video, and the album is being referred to as a “single audiovisual work”. So this begs the question: “When do we get to Ed and Tom perform Further in Oz!?”
Here are some Lyall and Smith visuals from The Chemical Brothers‘ last We Are The Night tour in 2007…
