The Chemical Brothers’s Further: the verdict.

Picking up the new Chemical Brothers CD Further you instantly know from the stunning artwork that you’re in for something special. Electronic music is about so much more than just music.

Masters of the genre like The Chemical Brothers know the phenomenal power of the combined audio/visual experience and they cleverly use both to envelop, immerse & inspire with their new album experience Further. They’ve created a visual feast of the senses with 8 short films to accompany the album (preview them with the interactive vid below) and in doing so remind old and new fans alike why they are considered true pioneers of the electronic music scene. Musically there are glimpses of vintage Chems throughout Further but essentially it’s about looking forward… forward to a future fueled by love, optimism… and rockin’ beats.

It kicks off with an interstellar swirl of computer bleeps and blips with the floating incantation “Your love keeps lifting me… Lifting me higher” repeating over and over like some sort of otherworldly electronic spiritual mantra… and so the Journey begins. Escape Velocity at an epic 11 + mins and Horse Power are urgent, chaotic classic beat driven Chems. While Swoon, Another World and Wonders of the World are hypnotic and uplifting – like being bathed in a cosmic shower of shimmering beautiful synth – with the lyrics “Just remember to fall in love… There’s nothing else” washing over you.

This electronic work of art needs to be heard & experienced properly. MP3 files are convenient, but with this convenience comes compromise in the form of sound quality. I say go get the CD/DVD ‘Experience’ edition, grab your mates and take a trip. This is a journey from start to finish. Put it into a shit hot sound system and play it LOUD… Immerse yourselves, get lost in the sonic soundscape, dance, sweat and lose your minds in the anticipation of imagining how you’re all going to literally melt down and explode experiencing Further live in the flesh in the (hopefully!) not too distant future.

If you were flying through space looking back on earth in all her beauty and marveling at the vast and miraculous nature of the Universe, then the new Chem Bros album Further would be the perfect soundtrack for your journey. Go take it.

  1. [...] Further, the seventh studio album from the Chemical Brothers, marks the return to the classic, elegant hooks that set the earlier Chemical Brothers’ albums apart. Further brims with epic tracks that transport you to those great days which turned into epic nights. For me, that’s long, unplanned London summer days. This is an album for close listening and reckless dancing. [...]
