The dreamy* Angus & Julia Stone are bringing their luscious, organic, acoustic sounds to the sleek modernist environs of Sydney’s George St Apple Store this Monday. They’ll perform songs from their album Down The Way (for which The Stones won an ARIA #1 Award last night!)… hopefully alongside Julia’s “pretty fuckin’ rad” (according to Angus) version of You’re The One That I Want from Grease.
We have 3 double passes for Angus & Julia’s exclusive iTunes Live from Sydney gig with a very tight crowd of 300 this Monday night, July 26 at 9pm. To be in the running, simply email your name, telephone number, and your favourite Angus & Julia Stone track to admin@theinsoundfromwayout.com. We’ll notify winners by 11am on Monday. Good luck!

After a sweltering and sticky 36 degree day, what’s to do but stand in an overheated crowded room with 1,500 excitable punters?
If there’s any band worth seeing under these circumstances, it’s the ever-charming Angus & Julia Stone… with their beachy dreamy acoustic folk, local roots, and a two-week stint at #1 with their album Down The Way, the Northern Beaches siblings sold out Sydney’s Metro Theatre in a heartbeat – rarely have I seen the venue so packed to the rafters (or filled with steam).
The stage was richly adorned (much like angusandjuliastone.com) with baroque wallpaper, lampshades, heirloom knick-knacks, clocks and telephones, family photos in antique frames, and one massive stunning harp (which my friend threatened to swipe and make a very slow escape with).
Angus and Julia alternated instruments all evening: Julia between keys and electric guitar, Angus between acoustic guitar, harmonica, and trumpet. Personal highlights included:
I personally attended the 18+ show on Friday March 26, but they also performed an all-ages gig on the Saturday to an extremely excitable young crowd. Check out the screaming! (warning – turn down your speakers)
Saturday March 13 was a pretty special day for me, giving my 7 and 1/2 year old daughter Paris her first taste of being part of the music industry. We arrived at midday to make sure everything was set up, bins stocked check, posters still up check, rider prepared check. So we hit the pavement around the Mall to give as many fliers out as possible. Paris giving away as many as myself due to the cuteness factor, I can’t compete with that. Paris with a big smile on her face, her competitive streak showing.
The band arrived to an eagerly awaiting crowd. Angus and Julia decided they actually want to perform and fortunately enough Mall Music pre-empted this, setting up a PA and guitars. Our resident MC Cameron Walsh introduced Angus and Julia to the impromptu performance. With two stools, mics, and a PA, Angus & Julia with little preparation performs an amazing acoustic version of And The Boys. Julia’s voice as amazing live as it is on the album, which stopped all walks of life from their Saturday shopping rituals, curious enough to pause and take in this haunting voice echoing from out of the store. The performance was totally Angus and Julia Stone, intimate, unplugged in that laid back Northern Beaches style.
Angus and Julia were happy to chat and sign for all their fans for close to two hours, reveling in the interaction and appreciating all the support from the core fans of the Northern Beaches. Paris waited patiently for her opportunity to have her poster signed. The smile on her face was incredible when Julia wrote “Paris, you rock” and gave her a big hug thanking her for all her help. Angus & Julia have just picked up another fan for life!
There is something really special about finding an audio/visual partnership that just….. works… Check out this stunning piece of footage from Sydney-based director Kiku Ohe for Witchery’s Autumn/Winter 2010 Collection. I am sure that you will agree that this mini-movie utterly transports you to another romantic world for a blissful 2 minutes and 24 seconds. Greatly contributing to this atmosphere are the gorgeous vocals of Angus (of Angus & Julia Stone fame) singing Draw Your Swords – one of the more poignant tracks from the duo’s forthcoming album entitled Down The Way (to be released 12th March 2010).
Watch it. Fall in love. Buy some clothes.
Now you’ve had a taste of Down The Way, head over to Angus & Julia Stone’s myspace this week to stream the album in full before it’s available on Friday. As for Saturday… Angus & Julia will be signing albums in their home territory of Sydney’s Northern Beaches: be at Warringah Mall’s Mall Music from 1pm.
3 days is enough warning to grow a bushy Angus-esque beard, right???
It’s called an acoustic version, but honestly this track doesn’t come much more stripped back than on the album. It’s deliciously simple:
The brother & sister duo also chatted to Nova’s Merrick, Dools & Ricki-Lee about sharing a sibling’s headspace, finishing eachother’s sentences… and sacrificing goats. Listen to the interview here and check out the photo gallery of their visit here.
If you’ve been watching SBS of late you would have heard a familiar voice in the Big Love promo running at the moment, yes that’s our very own Julia Stone singing For You from Angus & Julia Stone’s new album Down The Way due out March.
The guys will also kick off a national tour in March which is near sold out – log onto angusandjuliastone.com.au for all the deets.
In March 2010 Angus & Julia Stone will be heading off on their 4th ever national tour in March 2010, taking in lots of regional venues as well as cities but unfortunately this is an over 18’s tour… BUT before all you young’uns get too worried, they are putting on a special under 18s very intimate “soundcheck performance” at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on March 27. Go to the Metro Theatre website to grab your ticket.
We can pretty much guarantee Angus & Julia will perform their exquisite new single And The Boys – which is available now.
After winning hearts and ears here and all over the world, the talented Angus & Julia Stone return with their new single And The Boys which has everything that you loved about their first album and EPs and a little bit more… If you’re not singing it after a couple of listens I’ll be very surprised.
Be one of the first in the world to check out their new video!
The video was directed by Kiku Ohe an independent director/filmmaker based in Sydney Australia. Kiku has directed music videos and documented content for a variety of bands including Digitalism, The Presets, Daft Punk, Soulwax/2MANYDJS, The Beautiful Girls, Fait Accompli and Cut Copy. The And The Boys video was all shot on location on the Northern Beaches of Sydney (where the Stones reside) and all effects (like the flying) where created in camera – no green screens here!
Angus & Julia Stone have been surfing, visiting friends and travelling the globe performing shows and recording music and last week on triple j announced their album Down The Way will be released in March. Listen to their triple j interview below or here:
The first single And The Boys is really beautiful and has all those things about it that made you fall in love with them.
