How about dropping in at The Capitol on Thursday evening for a quiet beer and a not-so-quiet music showcase? From 7.30pm we’re proudly presenting a stellar lineup of Australian (& Japanese) talented artists to whet your palate for the following festival daze / days.
Not well acquainted with the lineup? Read about each of the artists below the jump…
If you weren’t at Sydney’s Forum Theatre last night… you should have been.
Our own Operator Please put on a blistering live performance showcasing brand new tracks from their newly released sophomore album Gloves plus first album favourites.
The gig was put on as a Channel [V] LIVE event and saw a mix of media and keen punters braving the rain to come out and see the band play.
Inside the forum, the room looked stunning… the stage was highlighted by a spectacular light show and the production was world class featuring a massive 10 camera shoot!
It really was special treat to see new songs like Losing Patience, Loops, and Volcanic come to life… and high energy numbers like Catapult and Just Kiss were definite party starters. Gloves as an album translates perfectly live and you can tell the band have just been dying to showcase their new tunes to an audience. If you didn’t make it last night never fear as the guys hit the road next month for the national Gloves Off tour.
Breaking up the set was a fun mashup of Lose My Breath and the groovy No Doubt tunes Hella Good. The band rounded out the night with first new single and definite crowd fav Logic.
This very gig will be broadcast on Channel [V] THIS SATURDAY (June 12) at 5pm. Program your VCR (does anyone actually have those any more???)
Hey ho! I am in a state of super-cool-niiiiice-ness! The kind of super-cool-niiiiice-ness that comes with listening to a band that just sounds… just right. It fits. Like a glove. (Ba-doomsh!)
You see, while Yes Yes Vindictive was obviously a strong album in its own right… Glovesfits Operator Please. It suits them right down to a tee, just like their sexy new Viktor & Rolf garb. (Which, by the way, looking hawwwt peeps!)
Them crazy little talented outsiders from the Gold Coast have grown up. And dang nam it, they have cool-ness there in spades – because magic self-confidence is just oozing out of their pores and pulsating right through the airwaves. It is this sassy chutzpah and mean swagger that really makes this album, in the wise words of Jason Coleman, *POP* (in the active sense of the word AND as a noun).
Even better than this is the fact that Gloves is yet another signal that pop music is becoming truly exciting again – people with brains rejoice, substance has made a comeback! It’s coming out of the closet, it’s OKAYY! Just because you like quality with your spaghetti, doesn’t mean you are expected to listen to daft experimental music (or “pretentious codswallop” as my dad calls it) – pop can feed your soul, too. Really! Just listen to this album…
… and you’re dodging bullets. Strutting down the street like a Bee Gee. From the get go tight beat of Catapult, the album cuts like a knife. Sexy, vampy, gorgeous pop. Disco, 80s, bass, drums, synths, hot tamale train (yes I have been watching waaaay too much So You Think You Can Dance), elegant, sassy, smart, saucy. And most importantly, you bite and it’s TASTY & SATISFYING! Miz Amandah Wilkinson is becoming a megawatt frontwoman, and the rest of the band are right there with her spark for spark. Standout tracks for me include Just Kiss (beautiful vocal arrangement & chorus!), singles Logic & Back And Forth (bang bang, score!), and Loops (love a heavy 80s rock beat with yet more of that wicked vocal harmony!).
So put yo’ gloves on fool! And enjoy this super fine album of goooood pop. Brought to you by Operator Please.

We’ve been fortunate enough to witness Operator Please perform tracks from their upcoming album Gloves on several occasions (including our massive annual trivia event – pic below – also featuring Miami Horror, 360, & Pez). But you, you thus far deprived masses, have been forced to wait patiently, cursing the lonely hours of 2010 as they pass Operator Please-less.
Thankfully the band are putting an end to your suffering… They’re heading out on tour for the first time since Sept ’08’s UK, European, & Japanese gigs, and they’ll present you with the super catchy glam pop-rock for which we’ve come to know and love them. But we promise you the new tunes are on a whole new level!
Operator Please’s Gloves Off Tour hits all major capital cities throughout June – kicking off in Perth and finishing up in their home town of the Gold Coast in early July. All their dates will be supported by triple j Unearthed faves Tim & Jean from WA plus Sydney’s Chaingang.
Gloves is released in Australia and digital only internationally on April 23.
So without any further ado… The Harbour Agency, Scorpio Music, triple j, Video Hits, MySpace, & SPA presents:
Did someone just turn the heat up?? …Cos it’s getting kinda steamy in here. Logic is one sexy tune, and the video does it justice.
The band collaborated with director Price James, who also directed Just a Song About Ping Pong (plus clips by Fiery Furnaces, Florence and the Machine, and Peaches).
The treatment emphasised styling, design, sleekness… and hot pink lips!
Remember that Operator Please are dishing out their upcoming album Gloves on cassette tape! If you get in early that is… You can pre-order 3 different versions:
Operator Please kicked off what will be a MASSIVE year for the band with a secret show last night at the “Never Land Bar” on the Gold Coast. As you can tell it wasn’t a secret for long as the place was packed and going off to their new tunes from their upcoming album Gloves which is out on April 23. The new album is an orgasmic feast of rock electro pop that will have the world losing their shit – it is seriosuly that good. Check out some footage below….
Remember you can grab the mp3 of Logic for free from the band’s website:
The first taste of the upcoming album Gloves is a ballsy punk pop number – a fresh, new, and ever-so-slightly glam tune that is seriously turning heads (well, ears are attached to heads). UK Pop music bible Popjustice also gives it the tick of approval, matter-of-factly declaring: “It is good”. Can’t ask for much more than that!
What’s more is that they want to give you the album on cassette tape! If you get in early that is… You can pre-order 3 different sized Gloves:
Thankfully Operator Please have been able to keep the world up to date with the progress for their second album with this teaser clip. The recording is as yet untitled, but there’s a few of their suggestions in the video and feel free to comment your own ideas – they’re all ears.
Huzzah for this awesome new demo track too – listen up!
