Julia Stone ‘Let’s Forget The Things We Say’

The enchanting Julia Stone has returned to us with her second solo record, on Valentine’s Day nonetheless.  ‘Let’s Forget The Things That We Say’ is the first single from her new solo record By The Horns, due this coming May.

JuliaStone

Off the back of touring Europe last year as part of the ARIA award-winning Angus & Julia Stone, Julia has stepped out into the limelight on her own. The single and the new full length album are produced by Thomas Bartlett (Antony & The Johnsons, The National and Glen Hansard) and Patrick Dillett (Mary J Blige and David Byrne). The National’s Bryan Devendoff also features on drums on two of the tracks.

With the release of this first song from the album comes a film noir-esque video clip for the track  (complete with dark city streets and a lovely leading lady of course!)

For more, head to Julia’s Facebook page.

Angus and Julia Stone in the Twilight

The Twilight series has thus far featured many beautiful things… supernatural creatures, Robert Pattinson and three incredible soundtracks. Today, part one (yep there’s two parts!) of the soundtrack for the fourth installment of the series was announced with Angus and Julia Stone contributing track no.2, alongside artists like The Noisettes, Cider Sky, Bruno Mars, Theophilus London and more. The track is confirmed as “Love Will Take You”.

Danish music Vs Aussie music: from the desk of our intern….

Just as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, it feels like I’ve clicked my heels and replaced my regular office (and daily life) in EMI in Copenhagen Denmark with a newly renovated and quite trendy Sydney one!

My first month as an intern here at the EMI office in gorgeous Surrey Hills has been surreal. Helping out in Promotion, Marketing and Brand Partnership, I’ve experienced new ways of approaching the fine art of servicing music, alongside meeting a bunch of truly fantastic people! My morning skimmed flat white from a small Colombian cafe down the street is the only stable thing of my day, which varies greatly in tasks! I’ve done everything from sorting a gazillion make-up items for the She Can DJ event, to creating artists presentations, gathering online tools, updating the tour schedule and last but not least, with great passion, posting news on this blog!

Now, what could be more appropriate than celebrating my 1-month anniversary as an Aussie by listing my absolute favorite Danish and Aussie bands? Hopefully you’ll enjoy discovering some of the greatest Danish talents, as much as I have enjoyed discovering yours (and don’t worry, you still got me for another 2 months!).

When Saints Go Machine – ‘Kelly
This indie-electro Copenhagen quartet have created two absolutely stunning albums, mixing the rough sound of heavy synthesizers with a fragile dreamy sound universe, supported by the gorgeous voice of lead singer Nikolaj Vonsild, whose voice has been compared to that of Antony Hegarty from Anthony & The Johnsons. ‘Kelly’ is the first single from their second album Konkylie.

Oh Land – ‘Son Of A Gun’
A girl you would just love to hate! Former Royal Ballet Dancer, now turned musician, with her second album just out in most of the world (out here soon too I think!) Oh Land dazzles her audience with a rare unique ability to stunningly visualize the emotions of her tunes, whether performing live or in a video. Her lyrics are so easy to relate to, and I love how she mixes genres and isn’t just ‘another blond pop babe’.

Vinnie Who – Accident Or Will
Now, this is one of my absolute favorite acts and I struggled choosing which song I should feature here, but I LOVE this tune. Vinnie Who brought disco back to Denmark and has been the most played act on the National Danish Radio in 2010. His album How I Met You is just something you can always listen too, despite mood and occasion.

Turboweekend – ‘After Hours
Do you know the feeling of coming across an album you can put on and listen to from start to end, with every tune touching something within you? No? Well, it’s very rare, so don’t despair, you’ll find it! Anyway… this band did exactly that with their second album ‘Ghost of a Chance’, drawing international attention, such as DJ Tiesto who remixed one of their tracks, as well as playing sold out shows!

Agnes Obel – Riverside
Rounding off the Danish list, here’s something for the soul. This stunning debutant has been the absolute best-seller with her breathtaking album Philharmonics and has got the whole country, both young and old, talking about her touching tunes (over 4 million views in a country that has 5 million inhabitants speak for itself. Okay okay, probably some German clicks there as well). In a hectic time of age, this truly is ‘just what the doctor ordered’.

Angus and Julia Stone – Big Jet Plane
Now, this was the very first Aussie act I came across when randomly searching your fine music scene. I was immediately touched by the gorgeous composition, especially the violins which evoke a sense of vulnerability. Plus, the lyrics really capture that all too familiar feeling, dreaming of a love that just carries you away.

Kimbra – Settle Down
I absolutely loved this track from the very first listen and the video is hilarious! The power of Kimbra’s voice is beyond amazing, she has such a coolness to her and the beats are not only extremely catchy, they also have a fierce edge to them giving her that little something extra you just can’t put your finger on.

360 – Just Got Started
I really have a soft spot for hip hop, so naturally I was hooked when I first listened to Melbourne rapper 360. This track has got such lightness to it, immediately making me forget all sorrows and feeling like spending a day at the beach with friends. I love the beat and the chorus will stick with you for days!

Emma Louise – Jungle
This track went straight into my heart. It’s additively stunning, combining raw with fragile, and the darkness of the lyrics goes straight to my soul. Really nothing else to say, is there now..

Crowded House – Into Temptation
I had to put Crowded House on this list! I grew up with their music, with my dad always playing it, so this is a band filled with memories of dinner parties and lazy Sundays. Their lyrical universe is like nothing else and I can totally disappear into their songs, as if I were reading a fairytale. This song is an all time favorite of mine and I was bummed out when the band didn’t play it at their two shows in Denmark 3 years ago (which I told them afterwards!)

The 2010 ARIA Awards (what we remember of it anyway) – an amazing evening for Angus & Julia Stone and EMI!

The Party started the moment you walked in to this year’s ARIA Awards. No easing in with a nice dinner and getting those early pleasantries out of the way. The bar was the first stop (and several stops after that). But first there was the red carpet to negotiate and the little matter of some awards to be handed out.

The stunning Sydney Harbour setting that backdrops the Opera House, this year’s chosen venue, was in full show as the rain that deluged the rest of the week stayed away and the industries elite came out in force. This all lent itself to possibly one of the most picturesque red carpet arrivals ever organized. Sunshine, Sydney Harbour, The Opera House, the cream of Australia’s music industry all done up in their finest… what more could you want?

Arriving at the ARIAs

As the sun set and the awards began there was a distinctly fresh feel to this year’s program. Not only was there a host of new and up and coming nominees, but the venue itself was new and determined to play it’s part. Artists and performers were situated on the tiered Opera House steps to collect their awards as fans clamored around the stage down below for live performances and the industry watched on from the top of the steps. Powderfinger kicked off proceedings in grand style and reminded everyone of exactly what they’ll be missing out on now that the band have called it a day.

Other performances from Washington, Birds of Tokyo, Sia, Dan Sultan with INXS and big winners on the night Angus & Julia Stone all showed the strength of the current crop of Australian Artists. Washington winning Best Female Artist, Dan Sultan Best Male Artist and Birds of Tokyo cemented their place as the “new face of rock” taking out Best Rock album. But it was Angus & Julia Stone who owned the night taking out the double of Best Single and Best Album as well as Best Adult Alternative Album for their honest and beguiling No. 1 record Down The Way and single Big Jet Plane. It’s the second year running the EMI label have picked up the Album Of The Year, last year being Empire Of The Sun for their double platinum Walking On A Dream album.

Throughout the night there were stutters and starts, hitches and glitches, but if anyone knows how to work through it and just get on with the show it’s the music industry, who let the quality of the artists and their brilliant performances do the real talking. Besides, we were drinking by the most beautiful harbour in the world with some pretty idyllic surroundings and some great tunes, so how bad could it be? Guy Sebastian closed the show in fitting fashion and everyone headed off to the after party. Now it was time for the real fun to begin!

Angus & Julia Stone’s “For You” soundtracks new Surf Life Saving TVC

It does make perfect sense… the uber-chilled Angus & Julia Stone hail from the surf-haven of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. You can practically feel the sand below your fingertips and smell the salt air when you tune in to A&J Radio.

Angus & Julia Stone They have lent their talents to the brand new Surf Life Saving TV commercial. The featured track is the melancholy For You, which the siblings may or may not perform on stage at this year’s ARIA Awards on Nov 7 (i.e. they’re definitely performing but we can’t confirm the track)!
