Sufjan Stevens, Sydney Opera House, January 2011

When Sufjan comes to Ol’ Sydney Town there’s a rustling of feathers; a ground swell that seeps through every conversation and people group. We don’t know why, but there’s a sense of pride and indescribable excitement when we say “I’m seeing Sufjan tonight”. Even those who have never heard of Sufjan Stevens, for some mysterious reason, feel an abnormal or uncharacteristic craving to see this prolific singer/songwriter. What they don’t know, is that they’re about to see one of he most unique and breathtaking shows of late executed at the Sydney Opera house.

The people were out in there hordes, a sense of anticipation in the air. We’d been eagerly waiting for this tour for some time since the Illinois tour landed on our shores three years ago.

This Age of Adz tour was a perfect representation of the album of the same name and also newly released E.P. All Delighted People. I have to say that Sufjan’s brand newy, The Age of Adz, was not complete without seeing it live! With epic 15 minute long songs, A portable spaceship (and theme), fluoro costumes, back up dancers, head pieces made from foil, glitter and an array of multicoloured and misshaped balloons falling from the roof, sometimes a wall of chaotic noise and sometimes a single spotlight with guitar in hand as if it’s an interlude is needed from the hectic overload of senses that the audience has just experienced.

In short, The Age of Adz tour was a two hour piece of genius being unleashed on a dumbfounded audience, keeping us on the edge of our seats every second.

Breaking it down, we couldn’t help but just stare in amazement at this spectacular that was unfolding in front of our eyes. The Age of Adz tour is something that will stay with it’s viewers as a moment in time where they saw heaven.

In conclusion this was quite possibly the best show on earth… ever. Watch out P!NK.

‘Last Hope’ on the road… next stop SYDNEY!

derek-hynde042

Last Hope is a collaboration between surfing filmmaker Andrew Kidman (Glass Love, Litmus) and Spunk Records.

Andrew Kidman chose six of his favourite surfing filmmakers to create short films that were inspired by the sea. The filmmakers include Albert Falzon (Morning Of The Earth), Jon Frank (Litmus), Monty Webber, Michelle Lockwood (Kids) and American underground surf filmmakers Patrick Trefz (Thread) and Richard Kenvin (Hydrodynamica). Kidman also provides four special cuts of his own.

The filmmakers created their short films to music selected by Aaron Curnow from some of the greatest independent contemporary artists; Smog, Sufjan Stevens, Mogwai, My Morning Jacket, Dirty Three, Holly Throsby, Vetiver, Bonnie Prince Billy, The Brown Birds From Windy Hill (Andrew Kidman + Neal Purchase Jr) and Machine Translations.

See the film preview here and Machine Translations (Chapter Two) Oh Ma The Sea Is Rising here.
