Knowing that we were going along on Friday night to see The Chemical Brothers was pretty damn exciting… except this time, we weren’t watching them live (booo), we were going to the cinema to watch the new ‘Brothers film Don’t Think…
Filmed with 20 cameras at a headline show at Japan’s Fujirock Festival, Don’t Think is the first time the full Chemical Brothers live experience has been captured on film. Directed by long term visuals collaborator Adam Smith, this full-length concert movie places cameras in the centre of the stage as well as at the very heart of the crowd to perfectly capture a fan’s eye view of the heightened emotional reactions of the audience seeing the band at their very best.
The cinema was absolutely buzzing as soon as we walked in, with people cheering and clapping as soon as the opening sequence started. It quickly dragged you in and made you feel like you were actually there in the pumping crowd (amazing!).
For any of you who have seen The Chems live, you will know that their graphics are probably the best in the world, and that their live shows are completely mind-blowing. This definitely was not lost on film… one word to describe their show is EPIC!
When it got to ‘Hey Boy, Hey Girl’ the whole cinema erupted into even louder cheers and a load of people ran down the aisles to the front to dance in front of the screen… tops came off, crowd surfing ensued, fist pumping, the lot! There was definitely something more than just the music influencing this party crew.
This was the most insane cinema experience ever, and highly recommended… it may even be the way forward for those veteran clubbers who still love the tunes but don’t have the stamina to dance all night…. everyone’s a winner!
Don’t ThinkSTARRING THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS A Film by Adam Smith
Don’t Think?! It can be hard to not think A LOT when it comes to the upcoming premier of what poses to be one of the best music movies of this generation. This will be no ordinary documentation, guaranteed. Filmed with 20 cameras at a headline show at Japan’s very own Glastonbury – Fujirock Festival – Don’t Think is the first time the full Chemical Brothers’ live experience has ever been captured on film, let alone in this way.
Concert movie debut = WINNING. Directed by long-term visuals collaborator Adam Smith this full-length feature film places cameras in the centre of the stage as well as at the very heart of the crowd to perfectly capture a fan’s eye view of the heightened emotional reactions of the audience seeing the band at their very best. “I wanted to capture what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd as well as showing and combining the visuals featured in the show with the footage we captured on this one night; to see how the music and visuals emotionally affect and connect with the audience” says Adam Smith.
Don’t Think undergoes a transformation from concert film to fully immersive document of one of the most mind-bendingly psychedelic live shows ever seen. This is every Chem Bros fan’s dream come true!! Now you don’t have to relive the mind-blowing concert experience via visually and aurally dodgy handheld videos uploaded to youtube! Nope, this release marks the first concert film to feature glorious Dolby 7:1, surround sound, mixed for the big screen by the band themselves. Music to our ears!
For a bunch of lucky fans we’re giving away double passes to see the film nationwide upon it’s release on Feb 3rd!! To enter, simply email us at admin@theinsoundfromwayout.com and answer this question: “What’s the one word you would use to describe a Chemical Brothers show?” If you haven’t been to a Chemical Brothers show before watch the full trailer here. “This film is the closest I will ever get to being at a Chemical Brothers show… and yeah, it’s a beautiful experience.” -Ed Simonsof The Chemical Brothers
My friend asked me, what genre of dance best defines The Chemical Brothers? An excellent question I thought as I pondered through their musical history, was it Techno, House, Electro, Breakbeat, Progressive, Minimal… the list goes on.
My answer is The Chemical Brothers (Ed Simons & Tom Rowlands) have been at the forefront of their game for so long now, they have ultimately conquered all elements of dance whilst staying loyal to their unique sound. And last night they did it again.
The Chemical Brothers blew the roof of the Entertainment Centre for 2 hours. Young and old, as far back as the eye could see, the flow of people dancing (no one was left seated) was overwhelmed with the intensity of what was electrifying to the senses.
Setting the tone with the opening track Galvanise, we were urged to “push the button” – a request to which we gladly complied with elevated adrenaline levels. Of course they played crowd classics such as Out Of Control, Do It Again, Hey Boy Hey Girl and Block Rockin’ Beats, but everyone was waiting to hear tracks from their new album, Further.
For me the highlight was Swoon, an uplifting melody accompanied by beautiful visuals, it was easy to become lost in a translucence that only makes you smile as you dance to that familiar Chemicals beat.
An amazing live show… Long Live The Chemical Brothers!
Courtesy of The wondrous Chemical Brothers, The Bloody Beetroots, Future Music Festival, and most importantly… US… we bring you a free download of the Bloody Beetroots remix of The Chemical Brothers’ Dissolve.
Dissolve is taken from their latest album Further. You know the one with the mindblowing visuals we can’t wait to see live?
OK, must admit… we’re in festival lineup announcement overload this month. Big Day Out, Laneway, Summadayze, Playground Weekender, Golden Plains (yet to come)… but Future Music Festival really caught our attention.
Namely because the legendary Chemical Brothers are headlining! They’re in Australia for headline shows in March next year, but honestly what compares to the thrill of a headline festival set after a sweaty blissful day in an open field with your closest 20,000 friends? Not to mention the their latest album Further was made for such environs… the stunning visual accompaniments to each track were directed by Marcus Lyall and Adam Smithspecifically for the massive screens and massive speaker stacks of the live arena.
The rest of Future’s lineup is bellissimo too… Steve Angello (Swedish House Mafia), Dizzee Rascal, Pendulum, Mark Ronson (don’t deny Record Collection is one of the albums of 2010), Leftfield (sing Afrika Shoxxx with me!), and Art vs Science. Speaking of, AvS are one of the many contributors to the upcoming album He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn. May seem a bit odd for an artists on the Future lineup, but their version of I See Red makes a whole lot of sense.
So without any further ado: Channel [v], Video Hits, Nova, 3D Magazine, inthemix.com.au, and MX present…

Picking up the new Chemical Brothers CD Further you instantly know from the stunning artwork that you’re in for something special. Electronic music is about so much more than just music.
Masters of the genre like The Chemical Brothers know the phenomenal power of the combined audio/visual experience and they cleverly use both to envelop, immerse & inspire with their new album experience Further. They’ve created a visual feast of the senses with 8 short films to accompany the album (preview them with the interactive vid below) and in doing so remind old and new fans alike why they are considered true pioneers of the electronic music scene. Musically there are glimpses of vintage Chems throughout Further but essentially it’s about looking forward… forward to a future fueled by love, optimism… and rockin’ beats.
It kicks off with an interstellar swirl of computer bleeps and blips with the floating incantation “Your love keeps lifting me… Lifting me higher” repeating over and over like some sort of otherworldly electronic spiritual mantra… and so the Journey begins. Escape Velocity at an epic 11 + mins and Horse Power are urgent, chaotic classic beat driven Chems. While Swoon, Another World and Wonders of the World are hypnotic and uplifting – like being bathed in a cosmic shower of shimmering beautiful synth – with the lyrics “Just remember to fall in love… There’s nothing else” washing over you.
This electronic work of art needs to be heard & experienced properly. MP3 files are convenient, but with this convenience comes compromise in the form of sound quality. I say go get the CD/DVD ‘Experience’ edition, grab your mates and take a trip. This is a journey from start to finish. Put it into a shit hot sound system and play it LOUD… Immerse yourselves, get lost in the sonic soundscape, dance, sweat and lose your minds in the anticipation of imagining how you’re all going to literally melt down and explode experiencing Further live in the flesh in the (hopefully!) not too distant future.
If you were flying through space looking back on earth in all her beauty and marveling at the vast and miraculous nature of the Universe, then the new Chem Bros album Further would be the perfect soundtrack for your journey. Go take it.
Well, the video for Swoon is a far cry from traditional cinematic Chemical Brothers short films like The Test, Out of Control, and Elektrobank – but it sure as hell doesn’t disappoint!
The big difference is that Swoon was directed by Marcus Lyall and Adam Smith, who have been responsible for creating the visual backdrop for every Chems’ gig since their live debut in 1994. If you’ve ever seen Ed and Tom live, you’ll recognise these incredible animations as a vital element of the live experience…
We know this is just the beginning of the audiovisual intergalactic journey that is Further… Each album track will have a corresponding Lyall & Smith video, and the album is being referred to as a “single audiovisual work”. So this begs the question: “When do we get to Ed and Tom perform Further in Oz!?”
Here are some Lyall and Smith visuals from The Chemical Brothers‘ last We Are The Night tour in 2007…
Enough about the past however… we have new tunes! The new Chems album Further arrives in Australia on June 4 and the lead track Escape Velocity is already streaming online. It’s not what I’d call easy listening: the 12 minute psychedelic epic sets your head spinning awash in a sea of spacey beeps and echoes: half Private Psychedelic Reel Part 2, half Burst Generator, all 4-am-dance-floor.
Much like Massive Attack’s Heliogoland, The Chemical Brothers’ Further will include visuals and 8 short films specifically matching each album track. The visuals will be provided by long-time collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall, who’ve created backdrops for every Chems gig since their live debut in 1994 (which from personal experience, are utterly spectacular – please head back to Oz boys!)
So far we’ve only wrapped our ears around this one track but we’re counting down the days til…
