While indie and dance fans may have become a little disillusioned by festival announcements of late, many of us were thrilled to wake up this Monday morning to the news that not one, two, but a TOTAL ONSLAUGHT of incredible artists will be heading down these parts for 2012 festival season.
St Jerome’s Laneway Festival
It’s all about the girls at this year’s St Jerome’s Laneway festival with the ridiculously talented Laura Marling,Anna Calvi and Feist all heading up the bill. Then there’s Chairlift, Austra, Active Child, Pajama Club (feat. Sharon and Neill Finn), The Horrors, The Drums, SBTRKT and much, much more… see below and head to their Facebook page for more. Laneway will tour Australia in February 2012.
Future Music Festival
Swedish House Mafia have confirmed all Australia tour rumours as true and will be headlining Future alongside Fatboy Slim, Tinie Tempah, Paul Van Dyk, The Wombats, Alex Metric, Die Antwoord, Jessie J, SBTRKT, Aphex Twin, James Murphy and Pat Mahony (LCD Soundsystem) and wayyyyy more. Future will tour the country in March 2012. Read the rest of the lineup here.
Hmmm… wonder if Tinie and SHM will join forces at Future?
Remember those self-lacing Nike Airs worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II? Remember how much you wanted a pair? Well it looks like the future has FINALLY ARRIVED, with 1500 limited-edition pairs of the glowing Nike shoes currently being sold on eBay. Known as the 2011 NIKE MAG, hundreds have been sold so farat prices ranging from about $3,500 to $10,000, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research.
Tongues started wagging earlier this week when a mystery buyer spent a staggering $37,500 on a pair – far more than the asking price by eBay. It was reported by TMZ yesterday that rapper Tinie Tempah, an avid Nike collector, fell in love with the shoes at a live auction in Los Angeles last week, and dished out the big bucks.
Fox played Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy who wore the shoes on a visit to the year 2015. The replica shoe, which is rechargeable, contains an electroluminescent “Nike” panel on the strap and various LED lights on the sole and heel. The Nike Air Mag Shoe will glow for five hours per charge. But sadly, these shoes won’t lace themselves. The self-lacing feature proved impractical as the design used in the movie required Fox to wear a battery pack with wires running down his pants. Looks like we don’t have that technology quite yet.

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to fly to Miami and represent EMI Australia at Ultra Music Festival. “The World’s leading electronic and alternative music experience” showcased a number of EMI’s artists including David Guetta, Deadmau5, The Chemical Brothers, Tinie Tempah & Empire Of The Sun, and well I don’t really need to tell you that is a weekend that will be forever stored in the memory bank and talked about for quite some time!
First it was a quick stopover in L.A. where, no time to rest, it was straight off the plane, quick freshen up and off to the incredible Paramount Studios to watch Mr Scott Horscroft – VP A&R Australasia at work! Mixing the next single for EMI’s newest member of the family (stay tuned for the official announcement in the coming weeks). A definite career highlight, working out of Studio C… WOW! Check out me behind the mixing desk! With Lil Wayne being mixed in the studio next door and the last 3 tracks mixed or recorded at Paramount all number 1’s hits in the USA! No pressure Scott!
Next stop – Miami baby! The sun was shining and so was the crowd of Ultra Music Festival. The Miami festival goers sure do have a different take on the festival attire: the girl sporting a Wonder Woman costume, a personal favourite of mine!
With the first of the EMI lineup hitting the stage, Tinie Tempah didn’t take any time to draw the crowd and boy did he kill it! (watch Tinie’s ) Tinie nicely warmed up the crowd for Australian boys Pendulum, followed by the Dutch man of trance Tiesto, it was then time to call it a night!
Day 2 and with Deadmau5 & Empire of The Sun as the headline acts, there was no time for any jetlag! With what felt like every 2nd person sporting Deadmau5 merch on their body or head, the crowd was ready to party and party is what we did! Empire of The Sun, you did us Aussies proud with blog’s going crazy, I think this one from the Miami New Times sums it up: “There is no arguing here. Best. Ultra. Performance. Ever.”
A little lie in and much needed downtime by the pool, and it was back on the shuttle bus and ready for the final day of Ultra – I’ll be honest, I was wondering if it could get any better than Saturday’s performances??!!! The Glitch Mob energy behind the decks got me back on my feet then over to Main Stage its was the last EMI’s boys, Guetta & The Chemical Brothers to finish off what has been an incredible 3 days of amazing tunes that still have me dancing in my sleep.
First the Grammy’s, now The Brits. We’re in a frenzy of international awards ceremonies. (The hangover is cruel but the party was great!)
For the second time in a week, Arcade Fire stood up to accept major awards (this time Best International Group and International Album at The Brits)… but it was really our boy Tinie Tempah who stole the show on Tuesday night.
Once Tinie finished performing and re-tuxed, he was again called on stage to collect awards for British Breakthrough Act (watch his speech below) and British Single for Pass Out – both of which were decided by public vote.
(On a separate note, I am sorry to subject you to The Beebs. I’m not 100% sure what his relevance is in this presentation).
How cute is Tinie’s uber-enthusiasm and gratitude to his fans!? We were all lucky to meet Tinie on a recent whirlwind promo tour in Oz, and I can assure you that he is a truly genuine and lovely chap – big ups Tinie!
