From Dogg to Lion – the Snoop reincarnation

This time yesterday I was completely unplugged from the Interwebs, sipping Pina Colada and deliberating over yet another massage. But boy-oh-boy, a lot can happen whilst detached from the world (wide web) for two weeks. Olympics will open, music festivals can get hailed upon and even 360 can turn Belieber.

But the best discovery post my digital hiatus is this: while visiting Balinese temples and being taught about Hindu reincarnation, Snoop Dogg had actually undergone one. From Dogg to Lion, Gangsta Rapper to Rastafarian; it happened fo’ shizzle. So forgive me if I’m a little late to blog ’bout this – but I was away – and it’s gotta be worth a Doggy Dogg blog:

It all begun during a trip to Jamaica, where the artist formerly known as Dogg experienced a spiritual awakening, “I didn’t know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, ‘Snoop Dogg.’ And he looked me in my eyes and said, ‘No more. You are the light; you are the lion.’ From that moment on, it’s like I had started to understand why I was there,” said Snoop, who would now prefer to be referred to officially by his birth name Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.

“There comes a point where you say I done it all, or there isn’t much more to do,” he said. “This was like a rebirth for me.

“With no disrespect to other rappers, but they can’t f— with me in rap … I’ve won every accolade you can get in rap, they call me ‘Uncle Snoop’ in rap. When you’re an uncle, it’s time to find something new … I want to feel like a kid again.”

“I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated. I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn’t have my third eye open, but its wide open right now.”

Snoop, or should I say ‘Broadus Jr’ then announced that he was busy working on his fifth album, Reincarnated : strictly a reggae project. ‘Snoop Lion’ was made officially official on Twitter when he opened an Twitter account under the Snoop Lion moniker. He then started hashtagging #snooplion and #reincarnated.

Yesterday Vice released an official documentary trailer for upcoming film REINCARNATED, which follows Snoop Dogg to Jamaica with DJ/ Producer Diplo and their explorings of Rastafarian culture.
