“Say Please” for a Monsters of Folk download

Michaella has already waxed lyrical about the Supergroup To End All Supergroups: the Monsters of Folk. The lineup comprises Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), M Ward, and Mike Mogis – which quite frankly has a few of us around the office a little flustered in Spunk folk heaven.

The self-titled album is out in September, but you can download the track Say Please from MonstersOfFolk.com. All you have to do is say…

Lightspeed Champion has free goods for you

My fave oft-swearing-cardigan-and-fur-earflapped-cap-toting-hipster Lightspeed Champion (AKA Dev Hynes) is back in the studio. This can only mean good things.

Now that the new Lightspeed record is almost done, he has more time for building websites (www.lightspeedchampion.com), making “shitty videos” with his housemate and a dcr-trv950 camera, and giving you songs to download.

Dev is giving away Heavy Purple (which Dev wrote and recorded 3 days ago at the studios of both his mate Scott and Patrick from Chairlift). Supposedly, this is his “feeble attempt at some I Want You meets Midnight Love Marvin Gaye type-shit”. Sounds… fascinating!

To collect your Heavy Purple mp3 (nearly wrote Heavy Purple Rain there!), sign up to www.lightspeedchampion.com and you’ll see a new tab with the free mp3 link.

Free download from Jonsi & Alex

riceboy-sleeps

Jonsi & Alex’s Riceboy Sleeps
is an album that us InSounders are sharing the love in full force – we’ve previously streamed a handful of tracks from this forthcoming album.

Now Jonsi & Alex are offering a free download of the track Boy 1904 off their website . The track is as you would imagine, haunting and operatic all at the same time, and features a sample of the only known recording of the last ever Castrato Singer. Amazing!

Sigur Ros – download the Agaetis Byrjun experience, ten years on

Ten years ago, all the Sigur Ros fans in the world were yannow…  in Iceland. In fact, they probably all probably crammed inside a single small cold dark room – which incidentally is where they all were on June 10, 1999.

Sigur Ros’ glorious breakthrough album Agaetis Byrjun was launched at the Icelandic Opera House ten years ago this month, and thankfully the band have released exclusive 2 video and audio from that incredible (& no doubt chilly) evening. Tears would have been shed.

Hafssoldownload here
A fascinatingly transitional rendition of the seminal Hafssol (later Hafsol), one of the true survivors in the band’s live show, having appeared in almost unrecognisably nebulous form on their debut album Von, and went through endless transmogrification year by year until 2007’s Hvarf/Heim double pack. To this day, Hvarf/Heim is some of my favourite album artwork.

Nyja Lagid
Filmed originally for Icelandic TV and unseen for years, this shows the boys when they really were still boys, performing a song that never made it onto Agaetis Byrjun (or any album) and disappeared from their set-list shortly after. The film also records the last show by original drummer Gusti. The audio of this live recording was featured on Sigur Ros’s first ex-Iceland release, the Svefn-G-Englar EP.

Introducing…The Black Ryder… with free download

the-black-ryder

After breaking away from The Morning After Girls, Sydney duo Aimee Nash & Scott Von Ryper formed The Black Ryder. Last year they supported the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Raveonettes, The Brain Jonestown Massacre & The Charlatans with Time Out giving them a cracker of a review and enough insight to keep us all chomping at the bit;

“Imagine the swagger of The Brian Jonestown Massacre with the dark blues / rock sensibility of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (with whom they have toured), topped off with a good dose of Mazzy Star reverb-drenched country minimalism.” Time Out

Having locked themselves away in a home studio the debut album is nearly ready to be unleashed. First sneak peak is the track Burn and Fade that features Peter Hayes from B.R.M.C on vox and stalking their MySpace I see that friends Leah Shapiro from B.R.M.C and Ricky Maymi from Brain Jonestown Massacre also lend a hand. Oh to have friends in cool places…

Download this track by clicking on the arrow feature in the widget above or head to their MySpace to jump on board countdown to the The Black Ryder album.

Hockey’s DIY clip + lotsa downloads!

We present… tadaaaa… Hockey! Can’t quite classify these lads… rock / pop / electro / dance / Kooks / LCD Soundsystem / Bloc Party / whaddeva-it’s-just-good.

hockey

Hailing from Portland, Oregon Hockey played at SxSW in mid-March (download the show audio below!), after a series of Manhattan and Brooklyn shows that stirred some serious buzz including a hook up as one of  Paste Magazine’s 10 New Artists to Watch in 2009.

The first single Too Fake is all over triplej, but there are already two awesome vids for Learn To Lose. The official version actually reminds me of New Order’s phenomenal video for Crystal. But the band’s own alternative vid is where’s it at. Someone get me a sharpie!

The album Mind Chaos is out on 28th August. Check the band’s vid Inside the Mind of Mind Chaos.

Oh, and I almost forgot… lots of Hockey downloads for you!
